Why did my adult hen go broody and never resume laying?

Hi-I have a 1-year old hen who is prone to broodiness. But in the past after she went broody she would start laying eggs again after 2-3 weeks. This last time, she went broody, stopped laying eggs, and hasn't started up again. It's been at least 2-3 months now! She doesn't act or look sick...

What breed and sex do I have?

Hi- I have a grown hen whose breed I don't know. Can anybody help me? She lays beautiful brown eggs. I also have a chick (the dark one--ignore the white hen) and I don't know its breed or, more importantly, its sex. It was born in late March so is around 6 weeks old. Any idea? Would additional...

8-week old chicks--any hints of their sex?

I will definitely get a couple more hens so the one isn't lonely--we're allowed to have 3 where I live. And luckily the farm will take back the male and not kill him.

8-week old chicks--any hints of their sex?

No, they aren't bantams. Those poor things were sick from a few days after I got them until just a week ago. They really had to fight to stay alive (and their 3 siblings didn't make it). I got them from a nearby farm and the farm has no problems with its chickens. So it was very strange. Mine...

8-week old chicks--any hints of their sex?

I forgot to mention that I started out with 5 chicks (all from the same mom) and 3 have died. They all got fowl pox (I think) and the one on the right was exrtra sick before it recovered whereas the one on the left was always pretty resilient. The smaller one is catching up in size every day so...

8-week old chicks--any hints of their sex?

Hi- I know it may be a bit early but I'm curious if anybody can make a good guess about whether these 2 chicks are hens or roosters? Would more/different pictures help? Many thanks! Sorrel

    bumps on beaks

Nothing has changed. The 3 are still seeming quite chipper and acting more and more like chickens which is very fun to watch. I can't wait until I can enjoy them instead of just worrying about them. Their enormous bumps are still there, no change at all. The 4th one is still very sickly, weak...

    bumps on beaks

3 of the chickens seem to be happy and growing despite the pox (or whatever it is). The 4th is still very small and weak, doesn't move around much and is very easy to catch. I would like to give it some sugar but I don't know how to do it--the beak is so small that I can't really pry it open...

    bumps on beaks

Thanks! That gives me hope. I just put bag balm on all of the bumps on their beaks. They tried to wipe it off right away but hopefully it'll help. They are so scared of me (and the kids) holding them, I hope the trauma doesn't make it worse. Only 1 of the 4 seems really weak and like it's...

    bumps on beaks

Thanks to all of you for the suggestion of fowl pox. If that's what it is, does anybody know what the prognosis is likely to be, both in terms of whether they'll live and whether they'll be okay at egg-laying?

    bumps on beaks

Hi-I have four 4-week old chicks and all of them have grown big bumps on their beaks. I'm new to raising chickens and don't know whether or not this is normal or if they are sick. One of our chicks died a couple of days ago (I'm not sure from what--just got listless and sort of wheezy, and in...
