Chicken snake caught in the act!!!

I keep a pair of loppers next to a square point shovel in several places in my yard. If I have a snake that I need to dispense with, I can pin it down with the shovel, then control it with the loppers. This works well especially well when I'm alone.

    Meyer Hatchery?

Hi MB, I did receive the 3 Columbian Wyandottes on Oct. 10. Despite all my efforts, one who was weak out of the box died at 8 days old. I was heartbroken. The other two will be 14 weeks old on Tuesday, & for the time being are living happily in a mini coup & run in my greenhouse. I had...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I was not prepared to see an egg from one my 21 week old hens (3 Barred Rocks, 3 Black Australorps) when I opened the nest box door Saturday morning to add straw! I stood there stunned! Then in the afternoon, I removed the ramp that goes from the run to the coop for cleaning & left it outside...

    Mealworm farming

You will be ecstatic when you receive your mealworms from Amy!! Got my order of 5,000 in October, fed a few, & let the others start to multiply. It's scary now to look in the drawers at the thousands of tiny worms!

Is it time for full time coop residence?

My 6 chicks (3 Black Australorps, 3 Barred Rocks) will be 4 weeks old on Monday & for the last week have been spending their daylight hours in their coop. They aren't quite fully feathered, but temperatures here are pretty much perfect for the move. Highs-mid 80s, lows-high 60s. The last 2...

    Mealworm farming

I'm trying to get started raising mealworms & have had no luck finding wheat bran within 100 miles of my place. I read somewhere (maybe this thread-I have actually read all 444 pages) that Gamebird crumbles could be used. My local farm store has this product which they say is similar to chick...

    The joy continues!

I introduced my 14 day old chicks (Barred Rocks & Black Australorps) to sand by placing a small amount topped with oatmeal in a shoe box top. After the initial terror of something new, they discovered the wonders of sand! They downed the oatmeal, pecked & scratched around, then discovered the...

Transitioning chicks from brooder to coop

Our 6x6 coop is finished. The chicks will be 2 weeks old tomorrow, & I'd like to allow them to spend some time each day in the coop. The floor is vinyl & I'm using sand (haven't put that out yet). The chicks haven't had access to any sand/grit since they're only eating starter & a one time...

    Oh, the joy!!

They certainly don't forget anything, do they? When I checked on them at 3:30 a.m., I'm certain they were looking for more. So this morning-no hesitation. They were jumping in before I could get it set down. I still only gave them about a teaspoon between the 6. Any suggestions about how...

    Oh, the joy!!

Finally got my 11 day old chicks to try yogurt (their first treat!) by sprinkling a little of their starter feed on top & offering it to them on my finger. One took a bite & hysteria ensued! They shared a teaspoon between the 6 of them (practicing moderation ).

    Meyer Hatchery?

My 3 Black Australorps & 3 Plymouth Barred Rocks came from Meyer & are now 11 days old-so far healthy & growing. I couldn't be happier! I talked to several different people in customer service before ordering-asking questions about everything-& they were all patient & super cordial. I have...

Chick novice & forum "lurker"-Hi from N Mississippi!

Hi all! My first post, but I've been lurking on this site for over a year! So I already feel at home & am grateful for the education I received here before getting chicks. 3 black Australorps & 3 Barred Rocks are now 11 days old. 3 Columbian Wyandottes are to arrive in a few weeks. I...
