Finally got my 11 day old chicks to try yogurt (their first treat!) by sprinkling a little of their starter feed on top & offering it to them on my finger. One took a bite & hysteria ensued! They shared a teaspoon between the 6 of them (practicing moderation

They certainly don't forget anything, do they? When I checked on them at 3:30 a.m., I'm certain they were looking for more. So this morning-no hesitation. They were jumping in before I could get it set down. I still only gave them about a teaspoon between the 6. Any suggestions about how much or how often I should offer this?

Ours are 8 months old now and laying well, so I give them some protein about every other day...either yogurt, cheese or cooked pinto beans. They don't need quite as much protein before they lay. I think you're on the right track; if you give them that amount maybe 3 times a week, they should do well. Once they get close to laying and it's time to change to layer feed, you can increase it some. I put out about half a cup when I give it to them, which is split between the 6 of them...probably not evenly since they all crowd in and try to push each other out of the way, LOL

That's a great resource, Ruby! Lots of good eats there...a "chicken bag" rather than a "doggie bag" LOL

Actually, though, you CAN feed them meat :) I wouldn't recommend any pork products, but anything else is fine as long as it's not highly salted and is in swallow-able sized pieces. When we have dabs left over, I just rinse the salt off and cut it up for them...they love it and it's good extra protein for them.
