I could see that working. Who knows, I may try it just to see. Luckily, we haven't had many hawk problems since the dog was trained to be with the chickens. Now raccoons are an issue. Looks like we'll be on alert for any new ways to stop raccoons!
That's horrible! Are you planning on getting any new ones to replace them later? Hopefully your repairs on their pen works well, and they are secure now!
Hi all.
So, recently I lost two chickens, and this spring, we are going to get some new chickens.
I would love help on the breeds y'all recommend to get! They will both be girls, and we love friendly girls that are also good layers.
Just an update: Since our last hawk attack, we have had no more attacks.
What I would contribute our success to: We have planted what we call 'chicken gardens.' These are designed by us to be big, bushy plants that provide protection so that no flying predator could see the chickens while...
Also, just now, we found what could be dead mites on some of our chickens feathers (they looked almost like messed up turf pellets), would that mean we have mites?
Thanks for the help! So I know one thing, if it was a hawk (which I'm almost certain it wasn't) it hasn't been back, and none of its friends either! If you are wondering, I believe my dog who seems to bark and run around at every sound he hears (hes trained not to with the chickens) is the best...
Hi all, sorry it's been such a long time since I've posted on here, but something new is happening. 2 nights ago, I lost one of my chickens to an unknown cause. I heard a big commotion, so I went outside, and i saw a wing in the house of the coop. I knew it was fighting, and then I heard a...
I'd say if they are 2 weeks apart, that'd be fine, and that'd probably be easier than putting them together later, but if you wait much longer than that then the older ones will have an established pecking order so when the new ones are added there will be more pecking and bullying. Also like...
I have one silkie. From the time we got her, she layed 3 eggs a week and was so sweet and friendly! Then, she went broody 3 times in a row But she came back to us just as friendly as the first time we held her! She is so sweet and soft and fluffy and fun to play with! I love her and would...
Barred rocks and silkies probably. Both are very friendly, and quiet! Barred Rocks are great egg layers silkies not so much. Both of mine are so sweet!
Hi silkie experts, I have a question: We first got our silkie 2 weeks ago. She layed one egg on the monday after we got her, and another on the wednesday that we got her. Since then, we have had 0 eggs from her. She hasn't layed for a week and a half. Is this normal in silkies? I knew they were...
I find that true with people! But with animals they are all protection for our hens. Our dog has chased off a hawk, and 4 deer (although that wasn't necessary). I have no problems with predators. You should also know though, that any dog can be a protector or a predator of your hens depending on...
Hey all,
I really realize how much of a fighter my two dellies are. We have one with a bad limp, but she is DETERMINED to live a normal life, limping around, eating, laying down, and our other hen has some twisted toes and for some reason walks funny. They are both so determined and such...
Well, I have a mini labrodoodle, and he is great with the hens, watches over them, lays with them, very tolerant of them. They probably scare him! Although it may just be my dog, he is great. I'm sorry he won't meet any of your requirements, but he is the best I could ask for. Thats my input.
