The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thanks! I'm just giving her a place of her own within the coop. After she shows that she wants to take them out to explore, she's free to come and go as she likes.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm eggcited to announce that after having my backyard flock now for four years, I finally have my very first broody hen! Her name is Willow and she's a two year old Black Sexlink. My neighbor had some eggs from his flock, as he has a rooster and I do not. I've put the eggs under her Monday...

Rosie, my 6 year old, still lays eggs. Not as many as the others, probably 3 or even 4 a week. But she surely still rules the roost. It will be a sad day when she passes. She has been a great joy to have around. This winter she ended up getting an injury to her comb, which made me have her...

The hens that were given to me are two years old. He has raised hens for many years, and all have been healthy. In fact, I recieved my first flock from them. He took a terrible fall off an extension ladder and hurt himself badly. I've had these girls now for about 4 weeks. I think I'll...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I've been given 6 laying hens from a friend who no longer can care for them due to health issues. I've had them quarantined from my flock since they arrived. I planned on joining them after dark on the weekend. I just got a good look today and noticed that two of the girl's have pasty butts...

I brooded mine in a large size dog crate in my house. Water bottle with chicken nipple for the waterer, chick feed tray for feed, heat lamp that is secured very well to prevent fall or fire, chick feed and some chick grit. We have raised our chicks from Southern States, two years in a row...

Thank you. I'm thinking she could have lost her balance while getting out of the nest box that are mounted on the wall. I could only guess what may have happened at this point. But I will say that she was acting normal yesterday.

I went out to check on the girls as well as to collect eggs, and found one of our 2 year old laying hens dead on the coop floor. I'm thinking she may have lost her balance when coming off the nest box. RIP Lady. We will really miss you

It appears to be impacted. She gets up in the morning with a full, firm crop. Is there anything I need to do to assist her? Or will it work it's self out on its own?

Hello everyone! I've not been on in a long time because I've been busy with my oldest daughter, getting ready to graduate from high school. Exciting times!! Graduation is today at 3, and a big party on Saturday to celebrate. So I've been getting the gardens ready and power washing deck and...

Our daytime highs this week range from mid 60's to low 80's. Nighttime temps range from 49° to 63°. Our chicks are 5 weeks old now. At what point can I put them out for good? There will not be a heat lamp outside.

What a great day! My oldest daughter helped me get our 10x10x6 dog run in place for the delivery of our new coop next week. The hens were so happy digging and pecking for worms and bugs. When we brought the hay into their run, they were busy hens. They inspected everything more than once...

I got 6 beautiful chicks last Friday at my local Southern States. I'm amazed at how fast they are growing! Soon enough they'll be out with the big girl's. I wondered if anyone has seen this on their chick's feet before. One of our chick's, Lily, has one toe on each foot that is turned...
