I live in the mountains of North Carolina and as cold as it is and early, Feb 24th, I have been smelling a skunk and seeing tracks in the now. I have my ducks in a pen but a skunk could get in and I think has. My dog was barking furiously and went out and smelled but didn't locate it. I think...
Lately she is laying in the evening around 8 pm est.
The shell is extremely thin. Before her shells were very tough. She has begun hiding her eggs and sitting for some hours of the day. Does anyone know what is going on? Could she be laying 2 eggs daily? It is january but I do leave...
I have 3 female white turkeys and they seem to be starving when I put the feed out. They free range all day and are in an outdoor aviary at night. I give them 3 lbs of feed twice daily. Is this enough?

I am brand new to Indiana Runners. I have a male and Female. They are 5 weeks old. They used to be friendly when they were in the brooder. I would put then in a tub of water and they had a blast. Now that they are in the garden they want nothing to do with me and will not go into the water...
I recently got 2 Indiana Runners. Named the female Indy and the male Hoover after the vacuum cleaner. To see them "hoover" their food and then go to the water and slurp it all up and back to the food. They are fast and funny. Those fat beaks just hoover it all in.
i just for 12 guineas. Had to drive 4 hours to find them. Want to know how you hatch them. I understand they don't like to go into coops and leave their eggs everywhere. At what age to they get to go outside? With 30 other hens, I have tons of bugs this year.

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio!
I think they are being so loving because they don't want to go to the chicken farmers. ;0) I am being so loving to all my girls and roosters in hopes in some way to make up for the treatment they receive in "another" reality.
Tonight I am going to set up a...
I just got 8 Pearl Leghorns who came from Murray McMurray. These are a month old. I thought they would be "flighty" but they are the sweetest things. They prefer to eat the food I pour on my leg instead of their recently filled dishes and will let me hold them, pet them and fall asleep in my...
That is wonderful!!! I am 70 and just started with chickens a year ago. No history of chickens in my family. No grandmas or anyone had them. I adore them so much. Have 17 (15 hens and 2 roosters, one RIR and the other BR). I only have one Buff because her sister was killed by a skunk! We...
Yes, to you. Your birds are beautiful and heathy. How long have you raised chickens and where are you? It looks as though you have lots of pasture for free ranging. What a blessing. We have 20 acres but it is in the Western NC mountains so we don't have pasture as you know it.
I love to...
Thank you for your post.
I have 2 coops. One has no water in the large metal waterer. The top is frozen so I am filling the bottom rim with water. It is on a bulb inside a concrete block but the water is starting to freeze.
I am going out and breaking the ice up and replacing the water...
I figured how to post a photo. Here she is with the black neck feathers and the black around the back feathers where she has been mated too often by a rough rooster. She is very submissive.
Do you think the black is dried blood? It has been there all through rain, wind, and several months...
Wow! Some say to put two nails in a stump, place the bird's neck between the nails and chop to kill quickly. Then drain the blood…how long does this take, then put into a pot of boiling water…again how long. Then pluck feathers? and remove insides like with a turkey?
Help needed.

This is a photo of my Buff's Black head I hope you can see it. I think her back is beginning to heal but not sure. It has been 3 weeks since I have isolated her from the Roosters.
With winter settling in, I know I will have to wait. I ordered a variety of chickens last Feb and like the Rhode Island Reds the best. They are unusually friendly, and lay large beautifully brown eggs and they lay often!
I swopped out 8 unfertilized eggs with a neighbors fertilized ones and...
