One thing I have learned after hatching eggs with broody hens is that a hen's instinct is 100 time better than all the learning & reading & playing around I can do with my incubators. Over 3 years of keeping records, my broody hens have had a 99.9% hatch rate & I have had about a 79%. I know...
This is from my last 2 hatches in a Little Giant Forced Air Incubator with Automatic Egg Turner. I used my own eggs. By the way I love this idea!! Makes me realize that my hatch rates aren't that far off. A little tweaking & hopefully my own % will begin to improve!
Broody Hens (unchanged)...

I've never thought of that. Duh! But if soapy water kills the bugs in my garden by suffocating them, I guess it would work on mites as well. I'll have to try that.
I have used Permethrin Spray. It wasn't Sawyer's brand but it should be the same thing. I have also bought the dust...
Patience is the most difficult part about hatching eggs. I also have a LG incubator (with the fan & egg turner). My first hatch was a disaster! Today is day 21 for me on my 2nd hatch. So far one baby is out & 4 more have pipped. It is so hard to be patient & watch. Trust me I have seen...
I would invest the money in a hygrometer. I tried it without the first time & only got 12 out of 31 eggs to hatch. Then I bought a hygrometer at Petsmart. When I followed the incubator instructions, the hygrometer read 85%!! By only filling the smallest resevoir in my little giant incubator...
Thank you for all the GREAT comments & suggestions!
Maybe I'll do a little experiment & do half in the egg carton & half laying on their sides. I'll let you know what happens.
So I have only done one hatch in my LG incubator which wasn't very successful. (12 out of 31 eggs hatched) I am trying out another hatch & bought a hygrometer because I believe my humidity was WAY too high the 1st time. But it also seemed like when each baby chick hatched they then rolled all...
Can anyone tell me what the correct humidity is for incubating eggs? I am placing some eggs in the incubator tomorrow & want to make sure I have it set for the right amount.
I got this off the MS State Dept of Poultry Science Website. Hope it answers your question.
"How long do hens produce fertile eggs after being separated from the rooster?
If the rooster in a flock dies or is removed, the hens continue to produce fertile eggs for up to four weeks, depending on...
I would spray her head with 'Wound Kote". You can find it at your local feed store. It costs about $6 for a can. It is also an antiseptic. I have used it lots of times before when my chickens have pecked the others to the point of bleeding. It works great! I read somewhere that because it...
Bad news. She didn't make it. I just got home from Tae Kwon Do with my son and she was dead. But the good news is that all the other 48 chicks are doing well. Being a chicken owner is not always easy on your heart!
Great idea. That is what I actually tried. But I went out a few minutes ago & she was out of the box. (Hope that is a good sign!) Gave her another drink & now I am trying to find a bigger box. Maybe I'll use the one she was shipped it. Then I can put some food & my 2nd waterer in there.
Thank you AmyBella. It is a lot of fun to watch them! Just puts a little rain on my parade to have a few not make it. I am hoping that it is just the shipping too. I am such an animal lover that it is hard to watch them suffer. (Just wish that if they are going to die that they would go...
This is my 5th time raising baby chicks. I have never raised this many at once. And this is the first time having them shipped to me. I usually pick them up at the feed store or have a broody hen hatch them out. The only time I have ever had a problem is when one pasted up & died. I have...
Thank you both for your replies. They are in a kiddie pool right now so they can move around to warm/cool spots. I would bring them inside, but my dog will eat them. Right now they are in the garage. Only the ones who are dying are chirping loudly. All the others are racing around, pecking...
I received 52 chicks yesterday & 3 have died. I am just wondering if trying to intervene is pointless. They are listless with labored breathing. As they progress, they won't even open their eyes. They also chirp loudly. I have tried to get them to drink with a little success. But they just...
One more thing. As they get really bad, they start to have a clear liquid coming out of their mouth. I've checked all of their little bums and there is no pasting.
