Need a Thermometer for the incubator.

I have a 35 egg styrofoam incubator. I am getting it ready to hatch a batch of eggs. I also have 3 digital thermometers. The three vary by a few degrees. I read the specification of a number of thermometers on line and most have a variance of plus or minus 2 degrees. That is a swing of 4...

High Energy Treats for Baby Chicks ???

I had a hen brood a few chick in the middle of a TN winter. Temp at night is 32 to 24. They are in an unheated hen house. I want to give them some high energy treats in addition to their starter food. Since I have extra eggs, I am going to fry (scramble) a few eggs in lots of oil and add...

Request PHOTOS of your nesting box

Here are photos of my nesting boxes make from used 5 gal dry wall pails. I drilled some small holes in the "bottom side" of the pails to drain out any rain that got into the box and large holes in the "back" for air flow. I think I need to raise the home boxes higher off the ground so I do...

    When can baby chicks...

I free range my baby chicks with a mother (or foster mother) hen. For me the question of when to let them go outside is one of $$$. I feed the chicks (and the mothers) on starter feed for a few weeks. When I let them outside with the adult flock my adult flock eats the starter feed...

    Keets are almost six weeks

I live in middle-TN. My keets have been free-ranging (with chickens the same age and a foster mother) since they were about 4 weeks old. They now are about 8 weeks old. They come into the coop at night and roost (on a ladder roost) with the chickens and their foster mother. I started with...

    sexing chicks using a magnet

Years ago before ultrasound there was a doctor that use this method to tell the sex of a unborn child. If he was wrong you did not pay for this delivery charge, but he charged twice what most other doctors in the area charged to delivery a baby. I am sure it works the same way.

    Backwashing the Pool and Chickens

The chemicals may kill the grass in the yard, but I do not think the chickens will get enough to hurt them. When I changed the sand in my pool filter, I dumped the sand in the yard and the chickens scratched it level with the yard. No problems, I I could see.

Sugar Water and new babies - Update! They are here!!

I do not know if I am doing right or not . . For my chicks, from when they are 2 days old to when they are 10 days old, I feed then a treat of eggs scrambled in lots of oil and with sugar added to give them more Calories. There normal feed (all they want) is 18 to 20% starter food. Your...

    Broody Hens

I put a small cheap 4 watt (?) night light (like one use in a home bathroom/hall) in my coop for my chicks. It comes on automatically and provides enough light for the girls to move if necessary but does not cost much $ to run.

how many chicks can a broody brood?

I think the answer is it depends on the weather. In the spring, a hen can raise a large number of chicks. But if you are depending on her to keep the chicks warn in the cold fall-winter, a smaller number will be able to keep warm FULLY under her.

Request PHOTOS of your nesting box

This spring I need to add 6 to 12 Nesting Boxes in the chicken RUN area. I have a few nesting boxes in the coop, but this spring I will have more laying hens and I will need more nesting boxes. There is not room to put the boxes in the coop so they will need to go outside in the run area...
