Do I have to do anything for the chicks, such as give medication, or feed starter feed? or does momma hen take care? I need to know asap because she had some hatch yesterday
I have 6, 2wk old ducklings, now this is my 2nd set to raise, the first set I tried to tame but no luck. Now I have a brand new start what should I be doing to get them tame??? Even at this young age they seem skiddish... I really want some tame ducks!!!!
Yes!! I googled it and that's exactly what she is..... as far as building a fence around her... we are out in the boon docks.... owls, raccoons, possum, skunks.... I just wouldn't feel secure and would never get any sleep! What I may do is build an additional coop just for the ducks, thanks...
Far too many predators to let them stay outside, and they would be very unhappy if I confined them to the run, they are use to free roaming.... but thanks for the advise! Guess if she does make nest outside I'll just have to keep her in run...

Since we are on the subject of ponds.... I live on 20 acres and have a big pond, but the ducks won't get in there due to the snapping turtles... so we are in the process of making a much, much smaller pond, it's in the perfect location... by the coop, it will be around 12X12X3 ft..... now here's...
First, I have 3 males, 3 females, 2 males are 15 mths old and the other is 4 mths.... they sleep at night in the coop with the chickens, no problems whatsoever.... my females are 4 mths old, and one has layed her first egg... very soft... haven't had any since... now here's the stupid...
Try and keep in mind that chickens give so much more than eggs..... they are pest control, can be very loyal companions, mood lifter.... if my girls never layed another egg I would still love and have them.. they have become a part of my farm and my life that I will never go without them...

I've raised the rooster since it was a chick.... he's a BO, 7mths old, he has never showed an aggressive side til yesterday, not only once but twice! Well I hit him with a rotted stick (all I could find at the time) and now he's been steering away from me, what is up with the sudden change...
I personally have ducks with my chickens, it has worked out wonderfuly for over a year now... so I'd say yes... however, I don't leave water in the coop at night because they stay up all night making a very big mess...lol
