It could be the young hens are starting to lay. Pullets can lay some pretty strange eggs at first. I've had one that layed eggs without shells (like you picture) and even without the membrane. After a few weird eggs she layed normal hard-shelled eggs. Access to the eggshells on the compost...
I'm looking to add another duck hen to my layer flock, and found someone who has mule ducks for sale. I've read that hens do ley eggs, but are they good layers? The oldest she has for sale are 2 months old. Can they be voice sexed like Mallard derived breeds? She has hens and drakes of both...
Thanks everyone for the info! My original guess was correct. they are 2 silver and 1 gold.
Sadly, our "Saxony" hen turned out to be a Pekin drake.... :barnie Super bummed because he's an extra big Pekin drake, way too big for the tiny Welsh hens.
From my calling around Wilcos, only the larger stores have sexed ducklings. We got the Welshies and Appleyard in Corvallis. The "Saxony" (a Pekin drake....:hmm) was from the Salem store. I've also gotten sexed ducklings from the Oregon City store.
Yes, they are Welsh. They are from a book series my siblings and I were obsessed with as children. The language of the main world in the book was pretty much Welsh. Cariad means sweetheart.
I would agree that it looks like a drake. The bill color, green feathers growing in on his head, and start of a curly tail feather are all signs of a drake. this is a great page to compare male and female sounds side by side. http://www.majesticwaterfowl.org/artquacks.htm
Hope it helps...
It looks like an ingrown feather. I've had a few ducks get them over the years, no different than an ingrown hair. A new feather should grow in normally. :)
After a few years of not having any poultry (two cross country moves), I finally got some ducks again! :celebrateThe first three I got are Welsh Harlequins from a local feed store that sells sexed ducklings, a big plus for living in town and only allowed 5 ducks.
I purposely picked out three...
Our ducks lay until early afternoon, so keeping them in their house would not be an option. :(
I do like that they keep hawks away, but not if they eat that many eggs! It will only get worse when their fledglings are hopping around with them eating even more eggs...:barnie
Hi all,
I'm about at my wits end with crows! :barnie We have been having horrible trouble with crows eating our ducks' eggs. I found 5 broken and empty eggs today in our ducks area. The worst part is they are nesting in a row of firs in our neighbor's yard. Is there any other way than...
I'm not sure Hydrogen Peroxide would be the best idea. I have heard it can be pretty harsh on poultry's skin, but who knows, it might work.
Nothing appears wrong with her oil gland, no swelling, all her feathers are still there, no irritated skin.
I just put more oil on her gland. It has...
Yes, our ducks free range, and have a compost pile teeming with worms and other yummy wriggly critters. I mix my own feed which has around 15-16% protein, and roughly 6% crude fat. I'm planning on adding sprouted field peas to their diet to boost the protein.
I was wondering if it might be...
