I had a 3-4 week old chick pass away yesterday. It was lethargic and ruffled and a bit unsteady on its legs for over a week before it died. No diarrhea or bloody stools that I noticed. Lost interest in drinking and eating but would eat fermented feed when offered. Any clue what's going on? I...
This is "Stewie" our two week old mystery chick. He's (or she) is our favorite because Stewie is the runt and is the most social. He cries for us every morning until someone takes him out of the brooder to play.
All my babies hatched! Number 3 arrived early this morning.I started with 7 eggs. Three never developed. One met an early death but the remaining 3 are doing well. This was our first experience hatching. Great experience.

Came home from work and 2/3 have hatched and third has pipped. 2 Australourp over Wellsummer eggs and one australourp. From our adult flock. Unfortunately mobile app won't let me post pictures.
I'm new to chicks and have a two week old chick who's breeder recommended an antibiotic after I showed him a video of the sick chick. The only antibiotic available in my town is for fish which the pet store said could be used for the bird. Anyone know how much to give a two week old chick? I...
We started from scratch on Friday and are building a new one due to chicken math. I now have 14 little chicks in a brooder in addition to the 5 hens we already have. It'll be a great coop with all the cold weather modifications it needs thanks to all the great info here.
Day 7 today and we candled the eggs for the first time. Looks like 5/7 have something going on although we're not sure if one has a blood ring or not. Will continue to watch it. Sadly the two eggs from our white rock look unfertile. Do blood rings develop on the side of an egg, or around the...
Did I make a huge mistake? I have a Brinsea mini advance that I'm using for the first time. I missed the detail that said to turn the cooling cycle on after day 7 and started it on day 1 (this morning). I've turned it off now but am wondering if I may have ruined the batch?
I'm hatching chicks in an incubator for the first time. I put seven eggs in this morning that I've been saving over the past week. I have an older flock consisting of an Australorp rooster, 3 Aussie hens, 1 White Rock hen, and 1 Welsummer hen. I have 6 EE eggs being shipped to me the end of May...
We've over wintered 5 hens and a rooster in a double walled insulated 6x6 with no run and had no major issues (they were pretty much restricted to the coop from December-April) but we are building a larger coop for them this summer. We need more room for roosts and feed. It got pretty cramped...
I agree. One winter I had a rooster get frostbite so badly that he bled and then the hens killed him. He was a mean old thing so the irony of it wasn't lost on me but still something I want to avoid. Sounds like we need to add some ventilation to our current insulated 6x6.
Thanks for all that info! I currently have a coop of six birds, a few australourp, white rock, and Welsummer. This is our third flock we've over wintered. I'm adding a few more birds (Easter Eggers) and they need a larger space or an additional coop. The current coop we have was given to us. I'm...
Can anyone point me to a link for cold climate (arctic region) coop designs? I'm wanting to build an insulated coop for a maximum of 10 birds. Free ranging isn't an option but I plan on adding a run. Winters are long so the birds will spend much of the time limited to the coop from December-April.
Thanks for the ideas. I've ordered eggs from mypetchicken to be shipped on a few weeks but am not very optimistic as to the hatch rate I'll get since they are shipping from so far away.
