Warning to perspective first-time emu owners!

Quote: Since I posted my pictures things have changed a bit my wife developed breast cancer (she is all clear now) but we down sized. The ponies have gone and we have fewer sheep, just enough to maintain the paddocks without me having to mow. Long term (much longer term now) I stull fancy an...

Introducing very docile Orpington Rooster to Flock of 3 Hens?

Three hens to a roo is fairly low if he does mount them all a lot you may find they get a lot of feather damage if so then you may need a few more hens >10:1 is about right in a flock and for short periods around 5:1 in a breeding pen

Introducing very docile Orpington Rooster to Flock of 3 Hens?

I think you will be surprised! lob him in with them throw some corn at his feet and see what he does. If he calls the girls and they come running then they already know the pack drill. Ditto if they then squat for him Keep an eye on your alpha Hen she will be the one to offer a challenge if...

    Protecting flock from a pool?

Ah ok I see your point I also have several deep stone troughs around my field full of water for the Sheep and Geese which are above chicken eyeline They do jump up to the edge to drink none have fallen in though. I did notice once that one flighty bird took off near the pond edge and landed...

A Tin roof... Yeah or Nay???

In winter Tin equals condensation inside especially if there is not enough ventilation but you have more that enough gradient for any condensation to run down the inside of the roof reasonably well without dripping to badly on the birdies. If the heat of the sun is too much in the summer then...

    Tractor wheel suggestions

Sorry no not really, the wheels came off the front of an old ride on mower/ I just cut the box axle in half retain each stub axle and some suitable fixing metal and bolted each one to a length of 2x4 timber I then pivoted that approximately where the Centre of gravity is on my tractor I then...

    Tractor wheel suggestions

this is 4Mx2Mx2M I just juggled around with the pivot point for the levers to A, be easy to raise by my children. B, get sufficient ground clearance. The pivot point is at the centre of gravity of the tractor. I do need to fit bigger wheels as my field has some nasty bumps in it.

    Metal or wood shed?

Matt the interior of yours is identical to mine except mine now has several dents in it from the sheeps horns ;) I too found the sliding doors a waste of time the runners fill up with poo and the plastic hangers break. It is after all a garden tools store really! The shed the OP suggest is a...

    Metal or wood shed?

Biggest problem with metal sheds is condensation loads of it I gave up using this one below because the roof pitch was too shallow and it dripped o the birds all night and the walls and bedding around the edges were always wet It is now a shelter for my sheep Ventilation is key and if i had...

Small coop, newbie and poop. What a combination!

Bin the straw and replace the floor with 25-50mm hardware cloth. The birds will be a lot healthier from the extra ventilation and you simply just need to move the coop every few days then clean up if necessary afterward These two don't have floors at all just Galvanized mesh
