    Incubator "lock down" question

Thank you! We had more problems this morning. The humidity level dropped severly overnight and we had a chick stuck to the paper in the incubator (I had put paper on the wire because I was afraid of them getting their feet caught in the wire). He was a little bloody where others had pecked...

    Incubator "lock down" question

Veer- Thank you so much for your response and the link! We have 9 total out of the shell now. One of them stopped zipping several hours ago and my husband used a warm damp washcloth and helped it out. The membrane was dried out. It has pieces of shell and membrane stuck to it. I imagine they...

    Incubator "lock down" question

I've read that you should "lock down" your incubator on day 18 and not open it again until all chicks have hatched and/or you are ready to toss remaining eggs. That sounds like a good idea in theory but isn't working so great in reality. We've had our incubator locked down since 8/18. The...

huge gullet-help! What can I do?

It's too late, she died. Next time I won't wait so long. All the other chicks are fine. Thanks for your help. I'll remember for next time.

huge gullet-help! What can I do?

nmsnoman is right. It is so listless that it didn't even move when I vacuumed near the cage like the rest of the birds. I haven't isolated it. I don't know if it's pooping. So I should start by isolating it so it can't have food and water? for how long?

huge gullet-help! What can I do?

This chick is 2 weeks old. The gullet is bigger than last night. It seems listless; while the other chicks are happily chirping and jumping around this one is sitting still quietly chirping and closing it's eyes. It can move quickly if I try to catch it. We've had this happen in older...

    Chick hatch trouble

We plan to take the turner out at day 18 this time. It is certainly nerve wracking! The poor chick is still pretty weak.

    Chick hatch trouble

Oops, I ran off and didn't see your last post. The member is off his wing so he must have gotten it off. He's had a rocky start. We left the egg turner in the incubator and he kept falling in head first and getting his head caught. I finally found a box to contain him in the incubator...

    Chick hatch trouble

It's head was under it's right wing. I don't know what the problem was.

    Chick hatch trouble

Thanks! I helped him open the shell. Part of the membrane had dried to his wing so I cut the membrane. Maybe that's why he didn't finish zipping the shell. That part that was zipped happened in about 15 minutes. I'm glad he's still alive and seems as strong as the others. Yay!

    Chick hatch trouble

Hello, This chick has been in this position for 1.5 hours now. This is our first time incubating eggs. All the other chicks were out of their eggs within an hour. I think that's a wing on the left side sticking out of the shell. The beak was there an hour ago. I think it may have its beak...

Here's another contender! The poor thing is a Rhode Island Red. I just want to bring her in the house, feed her really good and keep her warm! The nights are starting to really cool off!

butchering right now...what is the hair?

We've plucked but there's still "hair" on the bird that I can't get off. These are Rhode Island Red hens about 4 months old. I haven't plucked the Buff orp hens yet, 4 months old also. Should we just skin them and be done? We really want to leave the skin on for freezer burn protection. Thanks!
