If you do manage eventually to catch your pigeon I would pair him with one in you loft and not release him until he has raised at least one batch of squabs with his mate.
I feed whole corn through the winter to my pigeons helps them combat the cold.
As mentioned by other Backyard fanciers not a good idea to let them breed during the winter.
This is what a "FIVE DAY" old squab looks like.
1) A one day old pigeon is "BLIND" not the size of the egg.
2) Would require "HAND" feedings "EVERY 2 HOURS"!
3) Food can not be to "TOO HOT OR TOO COLD".
4) Must be kept "WARM" in addition.
5) Jump started with"pigeon milk"that can not be...
I never owned Roller pigeons.
I know a fellow pigeon fancier that has a kit of them and enjoys watching their flights and so do I.
However their are Parlour Rollers that have been bred from Roller pigeons for so long that they have actually lost the ability to fly.
I really can not fathom...
I can sense you have a "KIND" heart and you may think of me as "cruel and insensitive."
Without knowing how the bird maneuvers;it's overall health or condition; and how it is adapting to it's situation.
I would be considering culling the bird.
i do not see any quality of life for this bird...
That is terrific news happy for you and your pigeon too.
In sexing a pigeon first exclude the middle toe and disregard it. If the two adjacent toes from the middle toe are the same length it is female. If one is noticeable longer it is male.
Handling different birds you develop and instinct...
At that age it has two strikes against it
1) it has not learned to forage on it's own.
2) it has only a basic instinct of predators.
In it's favour
1) It should have a strong homing instinct.
2) It did not fly far.
If it has not returned in 3 days I would expect the worst.
That maybe true. My question would be are you sure death was caused by the cold?
I live in Canada I have white homing pigeons (descendants of the Rock Dove) I am subject to -40º weather. Long story short my birds live in an uninsulated baby barns. My adult birds are acclimatized and thrive well...
Thank you for thinking of me in a perfect world I would definitely be interested in a Jensen Blood line. However there are no racing clubs in my province. Therefore I am "NOT" interested in attaining any new birds. I just have pigeons as a hobby for their manure (I have a vegetable garden) and...
The first two photos look like Modena Pigeons the other would be only a guess from me. As a rule Mondena pigeons are poor fliers compared to homers. Then there is that "ONE" exception to the rule that has good homing instincts but takes them days to fly home. I think they will fit in just fine...
At one point she wanted to be a veterinarian (I do not think she is cut out for it to soft of a heart). However she is enrolled in a science class to prepare for her goal. I have been "WRONG" before. She is working part time as a pharmacy tech now. A science degree will open many doors for her...
