I thought they were OEGB hens but I'm looking at a Encyclopedia of Chickens book and the Dutch pictures made me reconsider. The book is from Netherlands and I noticed some chickens that are different than our American standards (ei: RIR have a rose comb in book)
Here's a pic of my little girls.
I had raised a dominant jack russel puppy and he would growl at my son when son wanted to put him in his lap. Before "just getting rid of him", I tried a trick: I had son gently put puppy on the ground with his hand on his neck gently lay him down in a submissive stance. After a few times...
I have 2 OEGB hens and my only "small" rooster is a bantam Cochin.
Do you think he will be okay to breed to these hens? Has anyone bred bigger to smaller? I just don't know if he will smash my hens.
I want Dutch chicks and see that only Purely Poultry sells them. Cackle sells Rosecomb and they look very similar except the comb. Are these very similar in personality too?
Thanks everyone for chiming in! I feel a little better and that I'm not going crazy now!
I think I may try to find flock raiser food and see if that helps too!
What is more weird is my spring chicks from last year are still laying strong right now; an Exchequer Leghorn and Large Cochin.
My other 8 month old hens are also laying, Faverolles and New Hamps.
I have raised laying chickens for 8 years. Used to buy chicks from TSC and bought Dumor feeds. Never a problem with the chickens or their eggs.
This year I 'upgraded' to rare purebred chickens, lol. Everything seemed the same as TSC chickens until recently. Many have stopped laying after only...
I bred my large (recessive) white Cochin hen to my Sal Fav roo. And it looks like her chicks are identifiable by color. The 1 pullet is wheaton like in color and the 3 cockerels are blackish.
Is this because of the SF roo's genetics for auto sexing?
Will all her chicks from him be auto...
Oh congrats! I'm south of Ann Arbor if you need more chicks to raise with broody momma. They are one day olds and you can put them under her and she'll accept them like her own!
I aquired a rumpless rooster and bred him to my Easter Eggers. I incubated 4 eggs and they were all pullets! At first I was happy but now I see these new girls are very hard to breed because of their rumpless-ness. I have 3 roosters with them but their eggs are always infertile.
I read online...
I think I discovered the problem. My barred rock hen is not laying the standard egg color for her breed. I have been collecting and labeling the very light brown eggs BR and the regular brown eggs NH for my new Hampshires.
I'm guessing that the BR is laying a brown egg that looks like my NH...
