Someone I know was telling me I needed to fence my property and an 8ft fence minimum go keep chickens. Just seems silly to put up thousands of dollars of fence just for some birds that only cost a small amount.
When oiling up the butt after cleaning I would use vitamin E for oil it aids tissue healing and by pokeing a vit E capsule with a toothpic its like a small applicator.
It was diffcult to keep up with them moving so much but I figured out how to beay them at that.
Removed the food and water then sprinkled some feed on the far side away from me.
It was like getting them to line up and present butt's ;)
All 30 seem good and healthy today.
Well to start off thank you all very much!
I have just finished getting more personal than I ever expected with chicks :~)
I used the cotton swap with warm water and a rag to pull it out. A few lost a bit of fuzz but seem fine.
So is this an ongoing problem or do they only have it for the first...
I think its what I see refered to as pasty butt however they seem alright.
There are 30 barred rock pullets one week old tomorrow. Only around 5 have it.
Tried to clean them with warm water but its hard as rock and I'm afraid of injuring them or stressing them to much.
Any advice?
So I now have my first real group to raise as layers. Arrived with only one fatality. All seem very active and healthy.
As I get more experience I hope to have others join them.
The brooder will be outside in a shed with no door and the temps are in the 50's to low 40's.
Is there a risk of them getting chilled even with the 250W lamp?
Good info thanks.
Will be 30 of them (barred rocks) bought a reflector getting bulb.
I have a plywood top on it but thought the open bottom would be enough venting.
Can change it easily.
Might a open bottom and top be to drafty?
Hi folks

Questions remaining is what heat lights to use and why?
Also, is the quarter inch hardware cloth alright for the floor.
I can always drop a floor in it.
btw its on its side to show bottom.
Plastic is to separate heated side so they...
