I just blogged my latest recipe for chick starter, along with pics of my current batch of chicks: Icelandics, Buff Brahmas, mixed reds, and a few odds and ends from my flock. They are doing great on it, and it barely cost me anything to make.
Countryuppiechick, I'm interested in knowing more about the phones you pm'd me about but your inbox is full! Send me more details if you would, please!
I need a cell phone....I'll get a new one in about 8 months when our contract is up but meanwhile I am using one that is so old it has an antenna that I have to pull up! Anyone have one sitting in a box somewhere that you'd be willing to trade for some of my handmade homestead-style goat's milk...
Thank you! Should the computer fan (12v) be wired for 12 v (fast turning) or as suggested by someone else, to a cell phone charger (5v) for a slower fan? At 5 v it barely seemed to move the air but at 12 v it seems to cool the incubator by evaporating the water too quickly. We added the fan...
The incubator has four little holes in the bottom and the place you put water is in the middle, under the egg turner. It is pretty difficult to get water in there without moving the turner and the whole thing cools down for a couple of hours after adding water. We haven't added eggs yet as we...
Slightly sprouting the small whole grains greatly increases the protein content. Barley's protein level shoots right up! You can sprout any of the small grains quite easily in a pail of water for a 24 hour soak, then transfer it to a pail with small holes drilled in the bottom for rinsing and...
That is good to know!
I do not feed whole grains for the price, although that is a good benefit. It just fits in with my whole feeding philosophy here. I do grind it a bit for the chicks, but they can handle the small grains by 10 days and most can handle corn by three or four weeks. I have...
Thanks!
My personal philosophy on feeding my animals is whole grains as soon as they can handle them, and NO SOY. Have you read that catfood label? Most commercial catfoods contain soy. I did use soy meal when I started with the whole grains, worried by all "the sky is falling!" info out...
We have a redtail hawk problem and recently, a juvenile bald eagle problem....so no tiny broody hens for me, as they would just be hawk snacks. I haven't had the success I'd hoped with broodies...but my flock is fairly new, only a few years. I've only been seeking a broody for 2-3 years. I...
OK, that was helpful, but I didn't see anyone using whole grains. Just pre-mixed feeds at $0.26-0.28 per pound....I feed my flock whole grains at $0.15-0.17 per lb. If no one else reading this has done this with meat birds, guess I'll have to experiment myself! But it sure would be good to...
So....I'm already planning for spring. My total meat bird experience is: two turkeys that were supposed to be hens and were not, and a few roosters from a couple of batches of broody-raised chicks. Now that cityboy dh is earning his farmboy boots, we have our first 10 official meat birds...

Do you mean chicken hen raised poults or turkey hen raised poults? I wanted to put some of the turkey eggs under a chicken, but they aren't cooperating with their timing!
The eggs that the turkey is on...she went back on them this morning and is fully broody...four of the five are...
