I did my first egg hatching with a broody hen. I had my white silkie sit on 4 eggs. 2 of them never developed, one of them hatched 3 days ago and the second chick hatched this evening. She sat on the 2nd chicks egg the whole time, until it came out. I just found it cold and lifeless in the nest...
You
you can put more eggs in, better to do it at night. But I would mark the eggs she's on, so that you don't get confused if she's switching nests or stealing eggs.
We lost our first chicken out of our flock that we started back in February. I believe she had sour crop and I kick myself for not seeing the early symptoms. I believe by the time we caught it, it was just too late. She was laying on the ground, completely out of it, weak and lethargic. Her crop...
Thank you for the input! I will separate their scratch from their feed. We are in a rainforest, so it's cool and damp here... So I think worms could be an issue. But I'm not convinced that could be it. I think I need to follow them to be sure they aren't laying outside! ;) thanks!
I feed them layer mixed with a small amount of scratch grain. They are not going through a ton of feed right now and I attributed that to the fact that when they free range they are eating like crazy. I was told vent gleet can be caused by dehydration and I was suspicious that the watering...
My 7 month old chickens went from laying eggs to no eggs over the last couple weeks. I treated them for vent gleet because some of them were having big nasty messes in the coops me yucky bottoms and I had a suspicion that our nipple watering system was not being used by them. We have fixed out...
They all seem totally normal. But one of my barred rocks has a mess on her behind, really wet and yellow slimy/crusty on her tail feathers...
Thanks for the link iheartnh!
Btw, I'm assuming you are in NH? I grew up in Laconia ;)
My friends chicken is a 6 month old speckled Sussex, she recently fell ill. Lethargic, yellow poop, not eating much an not drinking much. They have isolated her from the flock. She was laying eggs, but not anymore. Any ideas? Not sure if she should just be culled? Thank you!
I have 16 chickens, different breeds: brahmas, buff orps, barred rocks, partridge rocks. They are 6 months old and about a month ago most all of them started laying eggs. They were producing 5-10 eggs a day for a week or so and then all of a sudden they went down to 2 eggs every other day. On...
You can ask the hatchery to identify/mark the birds. With mine, they did different color marks on their heads and/or bottoms. Then they gave me a info sheet to let me know which color is what breed. But depending on the breeds you are ordering, they may be really easy to tell apart... look at...
I have Sussex and buff Orpingtons, they get along well. I have 16 chickens, 10 different breeds. Since they were raised together I've had no issues. I must add they are all hens, no roos :)
I have two silkies in with 12 standard chickens, 6 of them are BOs, they were all raised together and get along fine. I think you just need to be cautious, as with any introductions, if you are introducing new chickens to chickens you've had for a while ;)
