Well, I am not exactly sure. The eggs were under a hen- I have two hens only and neither have ever gone broody. So, when I noticed she was broody there were already 17 eggs under her. I labeled them 1-17. I am not sure how long she'd been sitting on them, a couple days iis my assumption. So...
Chick #7, hatched 9 days after the rest. Chick #1-5 hatched last weekend, #6 hatched Wednesday and we did the float test on the remainder of the eggs and this guy was wiggling around in the water. His egg was white instead of brown like the others and must've been slipped in late by another hen...
I have one rooster and two hens three years old. Neither of the hens have ever been broody before. We were out of town and had a house sitter and when we came back she was sitting on 17 eggs. Since we only have two hens, I am guessing these were layed over at least a 10 day period, if not more...
Hi! I have a broody hen sitting on eggs for a long time. She successfully hatched 5 chicks seven days ago and 1 chick two days ago. I did not know she had gone broody and was sitting on eggs, so the 17 eggs were laid under her over the course of at least a week and a half. After doing the float...
I've removed the 5 baby chicks from Mama because we have one 26 day late pipping chick. Thankfully, my broody mama has returned to sit on her late hatcher.
These chicks were born outside, under mama, can they stay outside in a cage? It's about 90 degrees in their box, they have food and water...
I have a rooster that was mellow and sweet for 4 months of living with us till we got him 2 hens one month ago. They have a coop but they roam the yard all day. He thinks the yard is his now...
I've been told on this forum to show him I'm in charge by picking him up and holding him at the him...
Thank you everyone! Trying these training methods. Hoping that he'll get used to his girls being around us. I may also try holding the girls? They are not used to people like he is and I wonder if this is the problem. They are afraid of us a little. The girls will eat out of our hands if we're...
The bantam can't hurt us, at most it's a fingernail type scratch. When we do have children around, if he hasn't mellowed, then we'll keep him pinned up. Thanks everyone!
That's great this worked for you. My rooster used to be mellow until this week, it's very strange. He does listen to the word no and will back off but only after he runs at me a couple times. And if I pick him up he bites me! It's so weird to go from the mellow sit on my desk rooster to this...
Ok great thanks. I'll try the lowering his head to the ground and slight pinching along with picking him up and carrying him around.
He's so tiny he can't hurt us but it's just strange to go from him wanting to be held all the time to him running at my feet!
But like you said, he's a rooster and...
Hi, thanks everyone. My pet bantam rooster is 11 months old and never showed any signs of aggression.
He follows me everywhere, dances around me till I pick him up. One month ago we got him 2 hens
and just this week he started being aggressive toward me and my husband. Now every time we go out...
Ok great thanks guys. This is a coop just for the night time for 3 bantams. They run around the backyard during the day.
I ended up building a 2 foot hardware cloth skirt around the coop to protect from predators.
Thanks!
Thanks, that's what I figured? I had wanted to be able to move the coop around and still protect from predators but I'll just keep it in the same place and build a wire skirt around.
Hi, I'm trying to decide what kind of flooring to use with my new coop.
I have hardware cloth and the easiest thing would be to attach a hardware cloth for the floor and then I can move the coop around the yard.
But will that hurt my chickens feet?
I could either dig a foot of hardware cloth...
