Hey guys!
So my husband and I have a flock of 6 chickens 1 rooster, all about 16 weeks old. They just discovered that our backyard neighbor has many chickens and 2 roosters. Well, our chickens could care less but our rooster, Rooberto, can't forget about it. Everyday we let them out to free...
So this boy/girl has been a topic of controversy between my fiance and I. I'm pretty convinced it's a roo but our local fish guy is saying it has a chance of being a lady with a big comb so it's making us doubt our certainty. He/She is the same age as the other orpingtons and is no bigger...
Above is our nesting boxes with crafted with some milk crates given to us by a friend! I think they look awesome!!! We'll put cardboard on the bottoms and fill with straw.
^ Our roosts and poop board below them that we'll fill with DPZ or PDZ? That sand stuff haha
Here's the deck...
One of my girls had this!! She is 3 weeks older now and doing 100%. I think some poo dried on her fluff and when she tried to pick it off, she picked off some fluff too. I could be wrong, but I couldn't think of anything else.
I don't think it's any bullying either because there's no blood.
I...
My girls are around 3 weeks old and they just had a couple hours outside, I think it's fine.I don't know much about this but I thought the Mother Hen would let their babies rummage around after a couple days of hatching. Maybe they're just mad because they have to go back inside? Haha
So. We got some chicks and the smallest orpington that seems to be the youngest has the biggest comb. We also think it's turning a bit red. But it could be orange? She/he is also getting kinda bossy and picking little fights with all the others. We're within city limits so no roosters allowed...
Awesome! I'll probably install some more ventilation then! Geez, I'm so glad I started this thread otherwise my ladies would be hot and sweaty.
They're getting so big it's crazy!!
littlecritters- I did see a thread about using PDZ! I loved the idea of it! How big does the poop board have to be for 7 ladies?
trefoil- Coons are so ruthless! Do they go for the chickens during the day? and for ventilation, we have 2 smaller sized vents towards the roof. Is that enough?
Thanks everyone! It really means a lot! No one that we know has chickens so this is our only source of information!
We will be definitely be predator proofing the run soon. I didn't know that some animals could be so relentless! The more advice the better for us!
And this weekend we will...
Thanks! We're pretty proud! Good luck with your shed conversion, it's much easier then I thought it would be. I'm only worried about critters getting under the run. But I figured I'd place some cinder blocks an inch into the dirt around the run. Anyone else have some critter proofing ideas...
My fiance and I decided to get chickens and didn't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on building a new coop. We mulled over the option of the small coops for sale at Wilco and thought about building something small but I didn't want my ladies in a small cramped area. We thought for...
I dipped a q-tip in hot water and held it on her butt for awhile until it slowly gets loose, then I slowly pulled the poo off with tweezers. I stopped when it started to hurt her but eventually got it all off! ACV in their water helps and also yogurt. I also used vaseline so the poop doesn't...
I just had a chick with pasty butt and I used vaseline after I cleaned her butt really well. I used warm water and q-tips to moisten the stuck poo, then applied vaseline with a q-tip! I've been doing this for 2-3 days and she's 100% better! Good luck with your baby!
Yes the bedding! You guys rock! What's funny is I was worried about them picking around and eating their poops, so it's good to know that it's okay. I've been adding pellets and scooping the mushed up areas that they spilled water on and it seems to work, thanks top knot
Hey! So this is a complete newbie question. How the heck do you clean the poops out of the pellets? We were thinking you just dump the old stuff and pour in brand new pellets but that seems wasteful, is there another way? Thanks!
We picked up 7 baby chicks at our local farm store and we are SO excited!!!
Here is our brooder
And our chicks! With our curious kitties
But one of our RIR chickies has a bare booty :( Is she getting picked on or could she have picked at it from possible pasty butt?
