I don't see how it could help in the winter unless placed on a heater.
My situation:
In the warm months I keep a small bucket in the run with fermented grains. I empty the food out of the bucket every morning and refill with more grains, keeping the water. I found the 24 hour time in the...
That's funny, I would say our EE is one of our friendliest. She doesn't run from you, squats if you just look at her, and is easy to catch and hold. She's not like some people's girls on here that jump in their lap or like cuddle time, but none of our birds are like that.
I don't feed FF in the winter so I won't need to worry about that.
The amount of openings you need varies greatly on how many chickens you have. I have also found that food that is out all day instead of given once or twice a day cuts down on the competition because they can all have a chance...
I don't see how it would work. FF needs to ferment at least 24 hours to get any benefit from it. How do you feed and ferment in a small area like that?
The bucket works because it holds more than they'll eat and you're putting the new inside so it has time to ferment before reaching where they...
I only see six too. Just like I only have 15 chickens. ;)
Our bantam EE looked like an owl too so she is named Gilfy, an owl from a book my daughter was into at the time.
The snow is supposed to start here in 1 1/2 hours. I got the animals all fed up and the horses groomed. Dang horses rolled in the snow the other day and caked their hair down. That won't provide good insulation! I made my daughter go out and groom them. ;)
Here are some pics of my Wellie...
I'm not looking forward to this storm either. Our land is already soggy I don't need more moisture right now. lol
I also had to cancel a bunch of plans this weekend. :(
Weather report says we'll get a foot of snow starting this evening through sun evening. Guess I'll give everyone lots of food today and hope there's a calm point that I can go out and refill everyone sometime saturday or sun morning without freezing my butt off.
I haven't gotten to experience...
I think Ashdoes eggs will be mixed with cochin so no blue eggs. Pretty sure she only has cochin roos now. I do have a breeding pair of CCL from her though and hope to have CCL chicks around that time.
That hen is one that I marked today so I can see if she's laying. All signs say she is but I...
Veterans get extra points on the application process so yes, they usually get the jobs first. My friend works for the FDA and she said right before they hired her (she is not a veteran) they had to hire this guy that was a veteran. They said they could hire him (even though he wasn't qualified...
I did the coloring on the vent trick today for our CCL and BLRW. I'm pretty sure they are both laying but I want to see which is their egg. I remember when I got a dozen of the CCL eggs to hatch I put one of our EE eggs in there and I couldn't tell it apart so I think that may be happening here...
I haven't yet. This last freeze froze the FF solid in the bucket I was fermenting it in first. Once the next cold blast passes I'll give it a try.
I use my whole grain mix in my bucket feeder. The only problem I find with whole grain is they pick out the stuff they like best first. They always...
