To cull or not to cull?

Just thought I'd post an update in case anyone looks here in the future. It seems to have been a bacterial infection. A week on duramycin and she's back on her feet.

To cull or not to cull?

Well after reading around, I've decided to treat it as if it's a bacterial infection for the time being. I've isolated her and put duramycin in the water. She's certainly feisty still. Her new digs are a box covered with chicken wire, and she flew right out, knocking the cover off to the...

To cull or not to cull?

I have a barred rock that's about 2.5 months old. Her top beak curves downward and causes her lower beak to be crooked (though not nearly as bad as some of the pictures as I've seen on here.) I trimmed the crooked part a couple weeks ago and she was able to eat better. Now I notice that she...

Can I use my Utility Room as a Coop?

I'd have to agree. We kept our chicks in the utility room until it was warm enough to put them in the coop, and it was none too soon. They can generate an incredible amount of funk in an enclosed area. Thankfully you really can't smell them once they're outside, but keeping the little poop...

apple cider vinegar in water.?? lother egg laying tricks

I'm new to all this, so maybe I'm wrong, but I thought vinegar was used more to increase the acidity of the water slightly and act as a disinfectant. It can't replace cleaning your waterer, but it can make it last longer between cleanings.

RIR chick died last night... Newbie here, be gentle

Thanks for the quick reply. They're actually in my laundry room right now, so I don't think it got too cold. Two of the chicks are a bit smaller than the others (including one which might be a roo,) but the one that died was one of the bigger ones. Maybe there's not much I can do, but...

RIR chick died last night... Newbie here, be gentle

One of my RIRs died last night. My chicks are all about three weeks old. It seemed healthy before I went to bed, but this morning it was nowhere to be found. I searched all around figuring it had somehow escaped but I could not find it. Later on, I discovered that it was buried in the...

    Identifying this one

Wow, thanks for the quick replies guys. I guess the lesson here is not to return to that small farm. They were supposed to be all hens. The guy said he would trade any roosters out for hens if I had some, but it's a pretty good drive, so I don't know that I'll take him up on it. I guess I'll...

    Identifying this one

We just got our first chicks last week and I'm not sure we necessarily got what we thought we were getting. We ended up getting a few from a small farm and a couple from a larger hatchery. This girl is supposed to be an australorp, but she looks different to me than pictures I've seen online...

Maybe I'm dumb, but I can't seem to order just the book. I don't want either of the premium packages, but I can't seem to add the book to my cart without them.

    Rate my coop

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, they're very helpful, and thanks for such a quick response. If anyone stumbling on my design is so inclined, please feel free to use it yourself as long as it's non-commercial. If I end up getting chickens (I'll have to commit a minor act of civil...

    Rate my coop

I'm thinking about getting two chickens (I can't handle any more where I live.) After reading up on designs, I decided to mock something up that would fit well in the area I have. Since I'm new to this, would anyone care to tell me if this looks reasonable? Any potential pitfalls from this...
