I have a weird situation developing in my pasture. I have 2 geese, 1 gander almost 2 years old and one of their offspring, gander 1 year, all Toulouse. I am hoping to sell the 1 year gander.
But the weird thing is they seem to be shunning my smallest goose. She is even being chased by the two...
We had a surprise hatch! These will make great pets, yard guards, or meat birds. Hatched approximately 5/24/14
Prefer they go in pairs so special pair deal 2/$20
I have read that geese, Toulouse geese in particular, only lay on a nest once per season. My girls hatched out a few babies on a shared nest at the beginning of March. Now they have made two different nests and have both started setting again! Is this normal?
This is their first year...
I always tried to show my gander who is boss. Pick him up, hold him like a football and talk to him sweetly about what a pretty bird he is while petting him. Do that everyday and it will wear down his attitude (I think partly out of humiliation). Keep in mind this is mating season. He is...
From what I read, and other members have shared, about Toulouse, you don't usually get eggs until the end of March/early April.
We have had a relatively mild winter here and mine surprised me.
I had also read that they don't lay/fertilize well their first year. Your chances of fertilization...
Today things are looking great! Definitely a lot more fight in her!
About 40 minutes ago, I put her back with the geese, and she had no problem running up and rejoining them. They seemed very eager to get her back!
A few minutes after this photo, they ushered all 5 babies back to the nest...
Here is a pic when I got her of the ground (right afterwards I saw two eagles swirl overhead). She laid her head against my chest and peeped quietly.
When I checked back on the brooder she was attempting to wobble toward the naked necks, who seem to think she is "freaky".
The naked necks took...
Update for the babies:
I have good and bad news and a few questions for you all.
Good is 5 hatchlings were present today.
Bad is one of them is not "thriving" like the others. They even just left it out in the pasture. It doesn't seem like it can walk.
I have moved it into the brooder with a...
I was in your shoes this time last year.
How many people in your family eat eggs and how often do you cook with eggs?
I currently have 10 free range hens and a silky rooster (who thoroughly believes size doesn't matter ;) )
It is just myself and my husband with a baby on the way.
They are...
Babies have started poking out their heads!
The other goose started nesting with the first and they shared turns laying and grazing, then the last two days neither would leave the nest. Our gander is a very proud papa and won't let any of those darn chickens or goats get close :)
