I have a VERY basic understanding of genetics in general. But I would like to learn about chicken color genetics. Could anyone recommend and good website or books, anything really to get me started? I have Googled a bit but most of what I can find are more advanced and I need basics. Like I...
So i have done my research and am set up and ready to start raising meal worms... all except the meal worms themselves. I asked a fellow chicken fan where to get some and they suggested West Knoll Farm, so I messaged her and sadly she is not selling any right now.
I have Googled some other...
We have wild birds too but since I have 2 goats and 5 dogs I have to have bowls everyone can use. My 77 year old father lives with me and he takes pleasure in helping. He changes all the water everyday around noon and I change again before dark. With that much fresh water I don't worry about the...
They have a large run that they have access to all the time and are released daily into the yard (2 acres fenced in). I have 2 baby pools, and two 5 gallon dog bowls around the yard and 3 waters and a small 'tub' in the run. That's for about 50 chickens and 4 ducks. They have plenty of shade and...
I was wondering if you add supplements and or electrolytes to your poultry's feed or water. If so when, why and what kind?
With Summer comming I have heard a lot of people talking about electrolytes and it got me wondering how people decide what to add and when to add it. I'd love to hear from...
I have created a page for my chickens, and all other animals. If anyone is interested in liking its https://www.facebook.com/countylinechickensandeggs
If you have, or know of a good page/group on facebook about poultry, or otherwise farm related, please share so I can like it!

Last fall I got 2 new roosters for my flock. I had roosters already but they were game bantums and I wanted a couple full size roosters for my large hens. One is a Buckeye and one a Buff Orpington. The first day both got bullied by everyone, nothing to serious but they definetly were not big in...
I see this post is quite old so Im not sure your still looking for suggestions about facts to add, but if you are I would add one about different color eggs taste the same. Many people think egg shell color has something to do with the taste.
I sell for $2 a dozen, that's pretty much the going rate around here. I sell to family and friends, craigslist and my best place to sell is on facebook. I post in local 'yardsale' groups and pretty much anywhere I can.
I'd like to know others opinion on this subject as well. I have many different varietys and 99% of the time I just want the eggs for eating and selling. However I would like to know if I could say seperate the rooster and hens of one breed so they are by themselves and take the eggs for 2 weeks...
I would agree with you. It stated several times though and according to the thermometer my mother got me it is a cozy 99.5. According to the one actually attached to the incubator it is 91 :/ and to my knowledge there is no way to adjust it.
I'll have t otry that analogy! I wonder if they will realize that cows are different? I worked with a woman once at a Dollar store.... we always got Holstein cow figurines. My mother was a dairy farmer and milked Ayshire's. I looked at my manager who was working with me at the time as asked 'why...
I sell eggs and try to clearly state that the colors are mixed unless they request one color only, yet I still get complaints sometimes that they only wanted brown because those taste better. I have no problem ginving just one color but people don't bother to read. I have one customer who only...
The directions came with the incubator. It stated several times that the built in thermometer should be used for reference only. It also has something to tell the humidity which is what I used. It is forced air. My mother bought me a proper thermometer today so I can try again.. I may be 33 but...
Question for everyone, but 1st a little back story. I bought my 1st incubator this year. I have had chickens my whole life and we hatched when I was little but I have never hatched any myself. So I read the directions and it said to never go by the thermometer on the incubator but to use your...
