I can't have roosters where I live, but I am in the market for a replacement hen. My Amberlink died of the chicken version of ectopic pregnancy recently.
Of the six original chicks I bought, five of them turned out to be roosters. Through wheeling and dealing, I replaced the roosters with...
Using ACV along with the oil should have the same effect as using oil with Epsom Salts - both products allow the oil to be evenly distributed throughout the water, rather than just floating on top.
So, mix your EO with ACV, then add the water on top of that to mix it in. Should work just...
I have a White Plymouth Rock Hen that is about 8 mos old. Recently, I replaced my roosters with Rhode Island Red pullets. After that, the Plymouth developed what sounds like a very bad cold. At first, she was wheezing quite a bit, but now her breathing passages seem to have cleared and she...

I find that I can't do it. I tried very hard to not get attached to them, but found that I just couldn't finish the job. And my husband absolutely refuses to try again. Frankly, we're both slightly traumatized by our first attempt.
Yeah...I'm really regretting not training my chicks to be handled. I guess I'll have to go with the fishing net and hope it works. Full length leather gloves will also be a necessity. :(
I wish I'd paid more attention to this thread, because it would have saved me money! I made a pvc feeder that came down, made a 45* angle, then had holes drilled in the top of the pipe. Problems: 1. they wasted lots of feed! 2. The feed got caught up in the angle and wouldn't fall down...
They sleep all huddled up in the corner by the pop door, completely ignoring the roosting bar just over their heads...
Even though they had no problem roosting in their brooder box...
I think they may be having problems getting used to the sand, and only gave in and came inside because...
We're going to put an RV bathroom vent fan in the ceiling of their coop to draw the air up and out the attic vents. I think we may have an old one somewhere...if not, I'll just have to spring for one.
As for shade, I have some canvas drop cloths that are either 6' x 8' or 9' and rope. I'm...
Thank you! I thought it would work, but only the largest, most confident hens will go up it without the siding attached. In it's previous life, it was a shelf in my laundry room that fell one night and scared us all to death! I've had it leaning against the wall in the garage forever just...
My chicks spent their first night in their new home last night. I practically had to sit on my hands to resist the urge to go out and check on them every few minutes...
They are spending most of their time today under the coop, because, for right now, that's the only shade they have...
The chicks have officially outgrown their Rubbermaid Tote brooder box, so my husband built me another one out of pieces of a fence we tore down last week.
They have more space than they really need right now, but I understand that Plymouth Rocks are large birds, and the rate they are...
My chicks are getting big!
But they are scared of the camera, so clear photos are nearly impossible!
...Until I learned to keep v-e-r-y s-t-i-l-l, until they forgot the camera was there...
