4 week olds adjusting to new home

I brought home 28 silkie chicks yesterday afternoon and put them right into the brooder inside the coop. We have a heat lamp and the bedding is straw. All of the chicks are huddled together in the corner, away from food, water and heat. It is not too hot in there and not drafty. If it was too...

Pine or straw for four week olds?

Thanks for the advice! I am picking up the chicks today and they are going straight into the coop. They have a mini-coop in there with a heater, so they'll be on straw right away. We used to keep the chicks in our basement until it was warm enough outside, but it was way too dusty with the pine...

    Do I have an EggNapper?

for the past month or so I've noticed the egg production is down big time. It got to the point where I wouldn't find a single egg in two days (and I have 20 hens!). The nest boxes were all mixed up as if something had been scurrying inside. After a week of this, I did more investigating and...

    Limping hen?

I've had a hen for over a year now and she has been limping since last summer. I contimplated sending her to chicken heaven, but my grandparents suggested just waiting and see what happened. She is still happy, but limps around. She can run if she wants (it just looks funny when she does). I'm...

    What got you into chickens?

very simple...my dh (dumb husband)! he thought it'd be fun (which it was when we didn't have children) to have some chicks. he knew nothing about it, so there I was doing all the research and raising these babies. I got so attached to the first group (5 BRs) and was very upset when they tried to...

    too soon?

Dh made the brooder draft free and put some insullation (ceiling tiles) around for extra comfort. They seem to be doing great and the temps are going back up (only one night of below 0). Thanks!!

    too soon?

Hey everyone! Dh put our 2 week old chicks outside in the brooder (inside the coop) yesterday with the heat lamp and we just heard it's supposed to snow a bit this week and get down to -4...is it too soon for them to go out? I really didn't want the mess inside or the smell, but I want them to...
