The new chicks hatched late last night/early this morning. So far so good. I put them under Amy around 10:30pm. She readjusted herself and settled back down. It's about 1 am now, and I just went out to check and everyone is quiet and happy. I'm hoping I'll see Solo and his two new siblings...
I have a hen that went broody on a single egg. I decided to let her keep it, and she hatched it out 4 days ago. My friend gave me a couple of new hatchlings today that I'm hoping I can introduce to Amy (hen) so that Solo (chick) has some buddies. Is it worth trying to put them under Amy tonight...

I was advised to post this here from the duck forum....
We have had a small-medium mixed flock of various chickens for several years. Low key breeds that all get along together. We have been thinking of adding some wood ducks to the group at large, and we are looking for advice, cautions, or...
We've had a variety of chickens for several years and they do very well for us. We live on 6 wooded acres in Northern KY, with a creek running the property. We've thought about the possibility of adding wood ducks to the group at large for the last couple years and are curious as to whether...
I have a small mixed flock of chickens with varying breeds (mostly easter eggers, some Brahma bantams, duccles, faveroles, etc...) in two 9x5 coops with a very large covered run. They often get run of the yard and wooded areas of our propery (6 acres)
I've been wanting to get wood ducks for...
They're only about 3 months. The other silkies, sultan, and cochins are out with the easter eggers and sussex and are doing fine, its these two that have the issue. I wanted my layers in the larger coop on the roost, but they're happier huddled with the bantams in the smaller coop ( we built...
I live in Northern KY and made the mistake (I think) of getting bantams this summer along with my layers. (the spring hatch got decimated by a predator...) It's now approximately 20 degrees here, and yesterday I had to pick up 2 non responsive bantams from my run. A frizzle cochin and a...
I noticed a week or so ago that one of my silkie chicks had a cross beak. I wasn't terribly concerned about it until I went down tonight and noticed another one did as well! I don't recall the second one when I saw the first. They are both eating, drinking, and growing well.....what has...
Male Silkies will be maybe 2 1/4 lbs when grown, and females smaller than that. I figure since I order a male and female east indian duck (2 and 1 1/2lbs respectively) that they would be good together.... Silkies also don't always roost, so I thought a couple of ducks in the coop cuddled up...
Would I want to fluff dry them, or just let them go in with everyone?
With my chicks, I go in and whistle to them with my hand in the brooder and let them approach me as they like. That way, I'm not chasing any one for lovings, and they get attention on their own terms... All of them are...
I loved the threads you directed me too! I'm a reader.... :)
Another question, how soon should I start encouraging them to swim. I plan on getting something from Home Depot or Lowes to fill up with fresh water for them outside that is deep enough for them, but light enough I can dump it out...
On Friday we have two black east india ducklings coming to us. Aside from our 6 grown hens outside, we also have 7 easter eggers and 8 silkies that are about 5 weeks old, and 9 silkies that are 2 weeks old. My plan (I hope) was to add the new ducklings to the brooder with this group, since the...
I know this is an old thread.......But Ugly Ducky....
I am getting 2 black east indie ducklings this week. Do yours ever fly off? Or do they enjoy hanging out with your flock? I do not like the idea of having to trim wings if it is not necessary......

The size difference is crazy! My 3.5 week olds are mostly feathered out and tall, and the new kids are only 5 days old and are barely as tall as the older ones legs! After last year I was beyond nervous getting two "rounds" of chicks, but I'm really heartened now.
Also, I'm alread pushing...
3 1/2 weeks ago we got 7 easter egger chicks, and 8 silkie chicks to add to our little flock. Yesterday we got 9 more silkies from a hatchery. I was expecting problems integrating the wee ones with the older ones. (Last year, the older chicks started carrying the little ones around by the toes...
