My girl, Foo, had one wing droopy for about 1.5 months (she also seemed to get very quiet at the time). Now both are drooping. They (I have her and Puddles her brother, as well as Pearl, a blue swedish female. All are almost a year old). Both girls are laying eggs and have been for some...
Thanks. I am not sure of the sex of any of them, although from the noise the calls make, thinking they are both female, as I have been told female calls are much noisier/louder then the males. But then, never having had ducks before, nothing to compare it to, either.
I adopted two call ducklings a couple of weeks ago. I was told I really should get a third duckling, in case anything happens to one. Saw this little guy on cl needing a home asap. They had no idea what kind, said it was about a month old (no idea of sex. I am also unsure of the sex of my...
Early fall, my bantam went through a really heavy molt. During that time, the other chickens picked on her, would not even let her sleep with them (she actually began staying out, I would have to go into the run and then carry her inside.) During that time, she lost alot of weight as well...
Oh, will have hubby do it when he gets back, just went to the store. I actually thought of stapling some tight woven carpet on it, but then forgot. How about fleece, would that work ok? I sew and have tons of it, I can even double up.
Thank you! That big fluffy girl is my Sapphire, my blue cochin. She is like a giant dust mop! lol Ruby is my little bantam girl. I think they will do ok now. I would imagine the lamp and not having the vents directly over them open will make it ok in there. We also completely covered the...
Thank you! It is pointing at them. They all snuggle up together every night (Ruby, the bantam actually sleeps UNDER the big girls, you can't even see her! lol) I am sure they are already much warmer. Just to get through this serious cold spell. Twenties and even teens they have been...
We covered the three closest to the roost, left the other two open (both the front and the back). I also have the heat lamp on over the roost for tonight, as well. Yes, it has been in the 20's here at night, so going down to -20, that is a huge jump! They have done good so far. We cleaned...
They do seem perky and normal, but my concern is tonight....it is going from 20 degrees to -20F overnight (that is actual temp, not counting windchill, could be as bad as over-30 below with teh windchill...we never get that cold here!) Was just doing this for tonight, as I think they have done...
Using fleece to stuff the pockets. Should I do them all just for tonight or leave a couple open? I have the heat lamp in there, and stuffing some of the pockets already made a huge difference. I don't want to do the wrong thing, just do want them freezing to death! Hubby is taking pics so...
Ok, put their heat lamp up over their roost, changing out all the shavings and adding all fresh and fresh straw on top of that, as well. Will close off some of the vents as well. Hopefully that will be good. I just don't want them to freeze overnight tonight, as it is really going to be alot...
Yes, the coop is double walled and the wall behind and the front wall are insulated, as well. Thank you. I tried to read and learn from what others have done. I want them to be happy, healthy and warm out there!!!
Ok will cover most of the vents with rolled towels and put the red heatlamp in for today/tonight. None are molting, all are fully feathered, so at least that is good. I have one bantam, she actually sleeps UNDER the bigger birds...lol
Thank you. Will do the rolled up towels. Should I close them all off, just for tonight? I would imagine air would still exchange, just block the wind? So you think I should plug in an oil heater or should I just use their heat lamp (it has a 250 watt red bulb) near the roost?
Here are some pics I just took.
You can see some snow came in through the roof line area. Are the going to be ok w/o added heat? Should I put some type of material (say fleece or something) over the openings at the roofline to try to block some of the air? Not...
I have an oil filled heater, should I put that out there? I don't have any type of heater in there, and so far, they seem ok (but snow actually blew in from the roofline, so going out to put fresh shavings in and if and when the feed store opens, try to get some straw as well. I don't know...
