I have debated for a couple weeks now on whether or not to share this story. I know some will flame me all to h for doing what I did... but when it boils right down to it, I don't care whether anyone agrees or disagrees. It is what it is.
about 5 weeks ago I had a hen go broody. It wasn't her...
If it's able to eat and drink, I wouldn't cull just yet... It's called wry neck, and it can be curable. Search for that, and you'll find some answers. There are probably better vids out there, but here's my blue silkie on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NykpyhBoVE0
I didn't treat him...
My flock is growing, and I'm gearing up to get serious about breeding for specific characteristics.
I would like to hear what different methods you all are using to keep records. Do you just jot down notes in a notebook? Spreadsheets? Pedigree software? I'm not really sure where to begin, so...
I'm facing a similar dilemma, as are some of my friends. I have an old ameraucana hen that is mean as can be. She scalped a poor little 4 month old RIR that accidentally made his way into her territory. For a while, she had the coop to herself, after having been the sole survivor of a dog...
I have some eggs that will be here around thur or fri. I've got room for about a dozen silkie eggs. I would like blue/black/splash and/or lavenders. I'm looking for high quality birds that meet breed standards -- though not necessarily SQ.
Here's the kicker though: I need them shipped...
I second everything said here. I got a batch of ameraucanas from them, and while one of them didn't make it, I think that was more due to heat exhaustion than anything else (It was over 100 deg. when they got here). The rest were very healthy, and laid huge, dark eggs. As others have said...
I love silkies, but I don't care much for bantams. I've heard there are LF silkies in england, but not here in the states. I had some larger-than-average silkies that at 3 mo. stood nearly as tall as my full-grown easter egger hens. But a dog got in the coop and killed them all.
I would...
I have seen some dark blue ameraucana eggs in the past, and now that I'm ready to buy, and I can't find the contacts. I have exchanged emails with a breeder in Maryland who has some VERY nice eggs and birds... but I live in Utah, and before I subject those eggs to a 2,000+ mile journey, I would...
Found some!
Wow, thanks for great response.
Okie, if for some reason I don't get the quality/quantity I'm after with this first batch, I'll look you up in about a month.
Thanks again,
Blaine
I saw that okiehen has some listed, but only 1/2 dozen. I only have one incubator, so I can't stagger hatches. I don't want to put in just 6 eggs, get 2 maybe 3 chicks, then have to wait another 21 days to get more. Would much prefer to buy all at once.
My incubator is sitting idle, and I either need to crank it up again or get some live chicks.
Here is what I am looking for:
I want to end up with 10 - 12 healthy, happy, good-mannered Welsummer hens, and a roo or two. Not so much interested in breeding as in eating (eggs), so I'm not...
I'm right there with ya, happychick! I've got my second hatch on day 19 1/2 in my 1588. I trusted the factory setting the first time around, and had quite a few problems and a low hatch rate -- even for shipped eggs (about 38%). I ordered a digital thermo/humidty (the Springfield one from...
I was told that the auto egg turners also bump the temps up a little...
After my first poor hatch, I decided I better get a digital thermo/hydrometer just to be sure.
I got this one from walmart:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10671021
was a total of less than $10...
I have done all that I said I would do, and here is my report.
I'm running on dip #2, hovering at exactly 100.3. I think that's where I want to keep it. I would feel better going down to 99.9 (which is where #1 puts me, but after reading the Mississippi Extension Service bulletin, I think...
OK, I toggled #4 off, then toggled #3 on. It dropped 1/2 degree, down to 100.8. Didn't like that, so I toggled #3 off and #2 on. It's now hovering at 100.4. I'd like to see it at 99.9, so I will probably go down to #1 first thing in the morning. My humidity is hovering between 40 & 45%...
Thanks, Mr. Moriancumr.
I just looked at the other instruction sheet that came with it, and it says something completely different from the other one. It says to turn off all the switches and go to the next higher one to raise temp by 1/2 degree, and next lower one to lower by 1/2 degree...
OK, I just did it again to verify. It is definitely not reprogramming correctly.
I reprogram it, and promptly replace the lid. Temp drops at a steady rate, about 2/10ths of a degree every 25 - 30 seconds. This time I let it go all the way down to 92. It was still dropping at the same...
I need some help here....
I just got my digital thermo/humidity gauge, and have set up my genesis. It's running a little high (101.3), and I want to reprogram it, because I had some issues with my first hatch apparently hatching a little early.
According to the manual, to lower the temp 1/2 -...
