I have a 13 months old buff Orpington hen who has always been a reliable layer and social, bossy bird. On Sunday morning, she was reluctant to get off the roost when my husband opened the coop in the morning. A couple hours later, she had moved from the roost to the ramp, where she was just...
Hi all -
My family and I are really looking forward to next Sunday's swap!!. We are looking to add 3-4 pullets to our flock, ladies must be vaxed and preferably feathered out. If anyone knows they will be there with what I'm looking for, I would love to hear about the breed(s) either on...
Yeah, unless you want to expand your flock exponentially, I can see how this behavior would get really old, really fast. Thanks for the input! I guess I'll dig out our old dog crate and find her spot to cool her buns for a couple of days.
I have an 8 month old buff Orpington who seems to be going broody. She's been fluffed out for a few days, and yesterday spent all day in a lay box on a couple of eggs. She stayed on after the other ladies went to roost, and I had to remove her - she wasn't happy at all - late last night so I...
Assuming the run is secure, I wouldn't be worried about it - though I get you're disappointed, it's a really nice coop. Maybe when the weather gets cooler they'll choose to use it.
Have you ever seen them enter the coop on their own? I don't see the ladder/ramp in the pictures, so it may...
And this is why I'm going to shoot for rainbow eggs as my flock ages out - I have 2 EEs, one is laying, and for some reason, I really like knowing which hen laid the egg.
Unless you watch them lay over a couple of days, you can't be sure - they don't all lay every day, and new layers may skip a couple of days. I have 5 BOs, 4 are laying. Once there was more than one laying, it was hard to tell 'who dun it'. The only days I know for sure they all laid is the...
Get her on electrolytes and offer scrambled egg to get her strength up. Hopeful someone with more experience than me will chime in with better advice. Good luck!
Did she bleed when she laid the egg?
Don't beat yourself up - there's not much you could have done to prevent a torn vent, and you're doing the best you can to fix it. I don't know about losing the feathers - maybe a moult? I would start a new thread for that issue. Good luck!
Thank you for responding. I have seen the watery diarrhea when it's hot and the hens are drinking a lot, it just hasn't been that warm here (about 75-80, tops) and they haven't been drinking more water than normal.
This morning I inspected the shavings under the roost and didn't notice any...
Use the method detailed in the opening post of this thread - it's perfect:

I have a 5 month old Buff Orpington hen who has been laying daily for about a week.
I noticed a few days ago, while she was in squat position and I had ruffled her rump feathers a bit, the she released quite a bit of clear watery liquid. She remained in the squat position for nearly a minute...

That's the thread - caution, there are very graphic pics at the beginning of it.
