I had one of my roos go down in the run and the first thing the other roos tried to do was peck his eyes out. I took him out of the run and put him out of his misery before they got to him. Ever since my roos became agressive I wear my safety glasses anytime I go in the run. I also wear jeans...
I wanted my flock and now I am paying for them, it is what it is I guess. I have 15 birds in my flock and am getting ready to cut the flock by 6 so the remaining birds will be more comfortable in their area and it will cut my feed bill. Right now I go through 25 pounds of chick starter per week...
Thanks Flip Flop. I was looking for a different thermometer and hydometer. I will go to Petsmart and pick one up. I am also going to make my own water wiggler with an egg shell and hairgel like I saw here on BYC.

Thank You Very Much! That is exactly what I needed. As soon as I get the brooding chics out of my spare bedroom I will be ready to set the incubator up and have my small brooder in there also for after they hatch.
BYC Rocks!
I helped a buddy get his truck off of the beach and he gave me this incubator he used to use when he raised fighting cocks (for show not fighting). I am not sure what kind it is or if they are reliable. Does anyone have any info? He has not used it in years but said it hatched many chics when he...
My wife and son bailed on me immediately and they are now all my chickens. I keep them in my "Man Cave" (spare bedroom with hard wood floors). It is my room to do with what I wish and right now I am using it to brood my chickens in a kiddie pool with side walls and covered with chicken wire to...
Considering they can eat peanuts I can't see how it would hurt them. I use pine because that is what I could get, but if I had an option for a free bedding I would use it. My main concern would be moisture retention or dispertion. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.
Mine are now 21 days old and I am keeping them around 75 in their draft free room. In 2 more weeks they will be going outside. Of course I am in south Texas and our temps are not really to bad until Jan. and Feb.
I have been feeding mine a tremendous amount of fresh veggies plus their chic...
Gassing? Drowning? ReallY?
I guess I am just a little freaked by this. I hunt and fish and have butchered many animals over my life and had to put a few down after wounding them but gassing or drowning never even entered my mind. I am for a quick painless kill by removing the head with a sharp...
How about fresh bread dough? I like to bake bread and make my own dough, is it ok to give the chicks a bit of the dough? They are 6 days as of today and eating their starter food, tomatoes, lettuce, grapes, and grit.
Mine are sacked out all over the brooder in all different positions, it looks like a frat house after a "trashcan punch" party. The bad thing is that they are partying at night and sleeping all day....sort of reminds me of my human teenagers...... when they were teenagers These chicks are only...
My chicks only peep loud when they are playing chase the chick with the tomatoe or lettuce I turn the heat lamp off during the day but it is 90 in their brooder in the house with the light off. After raising parrots and nearly going bonkers from the noise the chicks little peeps are lost in the...
My australorps are eating like crazy, I have 15 that are 6 days old and they are eating nearly 2 quart mason jars of starter feed, 2 cups of lettuce and 1 cup of tomatoe a day. The addition of the lettuce and tomatoe did not deter their feeding at the feeder at all, it just created all kinds of...

I do grow a garden. Down here we get 2 full growing seasons and I can all excess produce. I actually thought about letting them run in the garden after the plants had grown large enough that the chickens could not do to much damage and use them as bug patrol. Our garden is totally...
Thanks gryeyes and Lisa202. I never thought of the board at the bottom front of the nesting boxes I will do that tomorrow. I will also add some poop boards under the roosting logs. I think I have a line on some more plywood for free so I will be able to enlarge the coop. Now if one of my friends...
When I told my wife I was going to get some chickens she looked at me like I was nuts. We raised parrots (had over 100 at one point) for awhile and had gotten away from it because of the mess and expense. They were all in the house it was really loud in the morning to say the leaste.
Well, the...
My chicks will be here on Friday. I have built their coop and run, it is fully enclosed including the top, but I am worried about something digging under it. Dogs are not really a problem since one that strayed in the yard was shot dead the others give my place a wide berth. Do coons, oppossums...
