Does anyone in the Salem (or very close surrounding area) have non-hatchery, high quality laying breed hatching eggs? I'd love to find Barnevelders but am very open to any breeds with super fluffy plumage and very colorful roosters. My 8 year old's Barnevelder roo had to be euthanized today and...
I have a 2 day old chick we hatched with a problem that I don't know how best to treat. I noticed today one side of its neck/ chest is quite swollen and seems mush filled. The skin there is greenish yellow. The other side of its neck is normal. This does NOT look like a normal crop at all, and...
We were gifted a pair of Polish Tolbunt chicks (said to be show quality by the breeder) that were sexed as pullets but one turned out to be a roo. They are now adults, with the hen just starting laying and the roo recently started mating her. I know they are said to be rare, but they've never...
I'm in the midst of cocci treatment with Corid myself. I've never dealt with it before but after having two hens look like they were on death's door suddenly, I narrowed it down to cocci after much research. They have perked up considerably and seem to be back to normal, and hopefully we are in...
Does anyone here have the Ador1 automatic chicken door? If so I'm curious about your feedback using it in our wet Oregon weather.
I purchased ours last spring. It worked awesome through the summer and fall. Then the typical rain and fog came. We are rural outside of Salem, and get lots of fog...
What would you say this is? We live in wet, rainy Oregon, but the run is grassy, not mud. Is this red because of irritation? Are these raised scales due to leg mites?
Yes. Just in two ladies I bought a few days ago...which I now believe is appropriate to say I rescued (long story)...though I don't know enough about worms to say what they were. It just made me start to wonder what others use. I did one round treating for roundworm cuz that's all my feed store...
With the type of weather we have in Oregon, mainly wet (well, obviously not right now, but overall through the year), curious to know what you have found to be the best wormer for poultry? Input and advice welcome.
Thanks, RJ. One more question, can you confirm for me that these are pullets? If the lady is to be believed, at 19 weeks I would think that would be evident, but today I let them roam my back yard and noticed an awful lot of chest bumping, wing flapping, and squaring off/jumping forward at each...
I should know better than to get chickens off Craigslist. It seems my standards and others are very different as to what "healthy" means. I'm never buying off CL again!
I now have 2 Rhode Island Red pullets, 19 weeks old, that I've got quarantined away from my other ladies. All sounded good...
I just looked at the photo again, and us actually also stick one on that next shelf down on the left hand side. I bet they'd feel cozy an unexposed in there!
As long as the roosting spots are higher you should be fine. If you are worried, my only suggestion would be maybe lower 1or 2 to under the workbench, maybe sitting them up on a couple bricks or blocks of wood. Some of my hens prefer ground level boxes, I've got one who likes to be in a higher...
Thanks! They actually have shade from about 2 PM on, as there are tall trees that I've set them up next to which you can't see in the picture. They also like to hang out under the trailer where I imagine it is cool.
