Thanks. There is still hope then. : ) On a side note our little frizzle bantam found his cock-a-doodle-do last night. We weren't sure if it was a roo but that proved it.
Lol. Of course they would. I haven't seen any eggs around the yard. I do have one place I need to check when I get home that I just thought of, under an enclosed trailer that they like to hang out under.
Kad- Yes, they are free range. We usually let them out at 9:30-10 am. They put themselves to bed.
Scooper - We are ready for the eggs! My 6 yr old daughter can hardly stand it!
I have 4 RSL that are 21 weeks old and are not laying yet. I read that they should start laying at 16 weeks. Should I be worried? One of them has had a bright red pronounced comb and wattles for a couple weeks now, but I have still not found an egg. The other 3 are just now starting to get...
Ok. Now it seems like his feathers aren't fluffy anymore. It looks like someone pinched them individually. I saw him try to jump up on the roost and he coyldnt make it that high, I'm assuming because of the feathers. Also, his comb and wattle don't seem as red as they usually are. The comb also...
My little frizzle banty hasn't done much the last couple days. He usually is the most active but he hasn't done anything except get in and out of his coop for two days. He just sits there. His crop feels squishy. His poop is runny and all white. Does anybpdy know what might be wrong? Please...
Black racers definately dont seem to be an issue. I havent had trouble with garter snakes either. I really wouldn't have thought a yellow rat snake would be an issue. I guess I assumed they would know that a chicken wouldnt fit in their bodies. I figured I might lose an egg or two to a snake...
The reason I am asking is we lost a bantam cochin a few days ago to a snake (which I also posted in a different thread) and it was my daughters favorite one. I was just trying to find out what the chances of getting another one was. I don't really want to add too many more right now. Thanks for...
Is it a bad idea to get a day or two old bantam chick and add to a flock of 4 red stars and 1 frizzle cochin bantam that are 5 weeks old?? after time in the brooder of course. Or would she be lonely in the brooder and then get picked on in the flock?
aart - yes we have eastern diamondbacks and also water moccasins are the main venomous snakes in my area.
heather - I thought about killing it, but I believe another one would just take its place. That being said, if it happens again I think the snake will be no more. It was really hard to hear...
I dont know how I can, they free range during the day. Any suggestions would be great. I plan on building a run for them, but I will still let them out and I dont think a run is going to help against a snake anyway, unless I make it out of patio screen or something like that...
I write this post this morning with a heavy heart. We lost our first chicken yesterday evening. I never thought I would get so attached to a chicken. It was a little bantam cochin. She was killed by a rat snake. What is worse is the snake couldnt even eat her, so she was basically killed for no...
aart - No it was't a kit, it was all from my head with some ideas from here of course. I keep meaning to update my profile I just haven't got around to it yet. I do plan to put hardware cloth on the windows, I just didn't have any at the moment.
Tropic - nailed it! Lakeland, Fl
Thanks...
