Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

Oh, and we burned the bedding, our roosts, which were made of branches lashed together with twine and thus easily replaceable, and anything else in the coop that wasn't worth trying to save (ex. wooden boxes and cages that I'd gotten at bird sales with birds I'd purchased).

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

Because of the freezing temps (mostly subzero here before windchill), we used sevin vs. a spray for the coop. We didn't have access to a leaf blower as Dawg suggested, but DH used an air compressor to blow the dust around. It was messy, but it worked really well (I think...time will tell I...

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

We just put their bodies in the bag with the sevin and held the bag closed around their necks near their heads. I really worked the dust into their vent area and under the wings, but I did the whole body too. It was a two person job this way, but it went really quickly for our 15 head.

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

Truthfully, I'm shocked to have found mites as the problem given the weather we've been having. I'm still relatively new to poultry rearing, so I'm learning every day. It actually didn't even occur to me to check for them at this point (although I usually do during warmer months). Hubby and I...

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

Oops! You're right, Dawg! It's been a rough fall around here. We did Valbazen to worm and then ended up doing Tylan for a respiratory infection within a few weeks of each other. The Tylan was the injectable. Sorry for that confusion. Thank you for all your awesome suggestions though. We...

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

Oh, and in 7-10 days when we redust, I assume we will also need to do the whole coop rigamarole again and not just the birds, or will the freezing temps help us out in that respect?

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

Thanks to both of you for responding. We aren't even getting to 15*F tomorrow for our high, and that's without windchill (windchill has been in negative double digits lately). Sunday isn't much better. I found a suggestion for dusting the birds using an old tube sock filled with sevin in...

Red mite infestation!!! How to treat coop in subzero temps?

I lost a hen today, and admittedly I haven't been spending much time with my flock lately because it's just been so bitterly cold. We posted her tonight because I couldn't figure out what got her, and it was very clear within minutes that she had a bad red mite infestation. We wormed about...

To Wazine or Not to Wazine before Safeguard?

Thank you, dawg! That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm still fairly new to raising chickens (not quite a year in), and to be honest, until May I had no idea that you even needed to worm chickens. I had a sick hen and in researching what to do for her found threads about worming, and so I had...

To Wazine or Not to Wazine before Safeguard?

In early May, I wormed my whole flock with Ivomec pour-on. I've been suspecting worms again lately, but I hadn't rewormed yet. Tonight my husband watched one hen shed two roundworms right in front of him, so we're planning to worm the flock this weekend for sure, as early as tomorrow night. I...

Need help fast! WWYD for fungal infect. while waiting for Oxine?

Thanks for the suggestion of sand...I hadn't ever thought of that, but it's a great idea and would probably work well in my coop. The food does stay dry. The floor just has gotten wet about 1/2 way back to the back wall and all the way across. My coop is pretty large (maybe 12' D x 25' W) It...

Need help fast! WWYD for fungal infect. while waiting for Oxine?

Anyone have any luck using copper sulfate? I'm a little nervous about trying it because it can be toxic, but I'm also worried that the Oxine may be too little too late by the time it gets here. Where did you buy it? Is it the algae/pond version, the gardening kind? Please, please...

Need help fast! WWYD for fungal infect. while waiting for Oxine?

BTW, these are all fully grown hens and roos with a combination of breeds (white leghorn, RIR, wyandotte, etc.) and a combination of bantys and full sized.

Need help fast! WWYD for fungal infect. while waiting for Oxine?

I lost a hen last week that had struggled with random symptoms for a couple of months. I'm still not sure exactly what was wrong with her, but now I'm pretty sure I have a couple that are sick with fungal infections, specifically respiratory. I noticed one or two gurgling with a slight bit of...

1 hen fading, others seem fine

So, last night, I got her into a warm tub of water and cleaned up the little mess on her rear. I was expecting it to be smelly and red and irritated when I got closer to her vent. It wasn't. Her skin seems totally healthy (as far as healthy goes on this bird anyway). I'm not thinking vent...

1 hen fading, others seem fine

After a lot of reading and desperate digging online in the last 24h, I feel like vent gleet may be the most likely candidate for what is wrong with her. She is by no means a "classic case," but enough symptoms fit that I'm thinking of trying to address it as if that were the issue and see what...

1 hen fading, others seem fine

I should also add that her eyes are clear and there do not appear to be any respiratory issues.

1 hen fading, others seem fine

I have a RIR hen that has been slowly deteriorating over 4-6wks with brief periods of a day or two when she seems better. At first, she just seemed to be losing her spunk, slept in the corner instead of nesting near her roo (has never roosted on a perch really), and didn't spend as much time...
