Hi,
I have eggs on day 19 today and have 3 pips already. I can never figure out why either.
I use a Hovabator 1588, monitor the temp with a Brinsea spot check and it's always 99.2 to 99.7F. I use 2 1588's and have hatched a couple hundred eggs already this year and always have a 1 or...
Yes, they were BCM eggs. I have been filling orders since January and I was hoping my broody could hatch some for me to keep.
My silkies hatch 9 BCM chicks for me this week.
Carolyn
All my BYCer egg purchases have been very positive and I recommend shopping here
I've only purchased from an eBayer once and the eggs did not produce the quality of birds that they showed as their brood stock.
Carolyn
Sorry to hear about what you went through
But I'm thinking your eggs will probably be fine.
It's hard when you are not home and have the power go out.
You might want to get your hands on an inverter for your car in case it happens again
Just plug the inverter to your cigarette lighter and then...
I have about a hundred birds right now and our broodies are usually silkies in the barn because I can isolate them
I usually don't use the outdoor hen house birds to set eggs and I should have let them know that.
My daughter and hubby just didn't realize that the BCM hen was setting eggs.
They...
I had business in town last night so my daughter and hubby collected eggs from my hens last night.
One of my BCM hens had been broody and was setting eggs in one of the laying boxes and they collected her eggs.
I didn't know this until I was gathering the eggs for our eating egg customers this...
Good luck on your hatch. Are their eggs pretty big?
I traded some silkie chicks this year for 10 buff sussex chicks and I just adore them.
The seem to be bigger everyday and they are foraging great with my older birds.
Cannot wait to hatch some babes from them next year.
Carolyn
Hi,
I don't see why not.
Basically you are doing the same thing that an auto turner would be doing.
But....
I'm not experienced with still air bators (only forced air) so I cannot tell you if an egg carton would affect the heat distribution in a still air environment.
Hopefully some one can...
Then it sounds like the first example, just too big to move around in the egg and get into position to pip.
Next time around you might want to try to lower the humidity by 10% and candle at days 10 and 14 to really track the drying down process.
Carolyn
Hi,
Poor little guy
Warm water on something very soft should help.
Chicks can hatch sticky sometimes and I'm guessing his eyes should be fine by how you are describing it.
Carolyn
Oh, I should have asked, shipped eggs can have poor (sometimes non-existent) hatches.
So much for my dissertation on humidity
They may have had a rough trip through the postal service.
You may still want to open some up to get some idea of what happened.
Carolyn
Sorry about your poor hatch rate.
What was your humidity at days 1-18?
Fully developed chicks that do not hatch is frequently caused by the humidity being too high during the first 18 days of incubation.
If the eggs dry down properly the air cells increase in size by quite a bit during...
Sorry to say that they probably could be thrown out. Assuming that your temps were steady.
If they are black copper marans egg (I'm guessing because you mentioned they are very dark) 45-50% humidity may have been a bit high for them the first 18 days.
Because of their dark coloring that coats...
Definitely raise the humidity if the air cells are looking advanced for the day that you are on.
Relative humidity is just a number, the air cells are telling what's really going on in your incubator.
Carolyn
Hi,
I recommend you read this article on dry incubation:

It will give you a lot of helpful info.
Carolyn
Hi,
The turner motor gives off heat but I don't know if it's enough to raise the temp in your bator but shouldn't affect your humidity.
The temp will drop after adding the eggs but don't make any adjustments too soon. Make that decision after 24 hours when the eggs have reached temperature...
Great pics
That egg does not look like a day 18 egg to me. Is it one you set on 5/8?
Your 5/5 set would be locking down tomorrow and your 5/8 eggs wouldn't be lock down until Thursday of this week.
Since the dates are so close, I'd wait until TUesday to stop turning and bump up the humidity...
