I hate to ask, but...
I just purchased 4 barred rock chicks from tractor supply and am worried my selection process was flawed.
I went for dark all around... I picked the last 4 with no white spot on the heads and dark legs, all we're dark otherwise as well.
Will dark heads be female?
For the most part, yes... But... She seems to have assigned buddy status to a speckled Sussex hen we have, but if she loses sight of said hen she will call and call. Of course the hen has no clue she is being called.for...
I have looked.on craigslist for an adult buddy but cannot find one...
Update... Miss guinea, now named Bertolli, has roosted both nights with the chickens in the coop. She hops right on up beating some of the hens to the punch. This.morning I found a guinea egg in one.of.the horse stalls! I am pleased that her, and 3 hens, relocation to our.flock has produced an...
Well... After over two hours of calling buckwheat in the front yard area ( yep, tried to catch it right after my last post and boy can she fly!) I went to check where she was... Evey, my cross beak hen followed me as usual, we call her my shadow... When miss guinea pants saw Evey she stopped...
I know guineas can be loud, but she is constantly calling. I went to buy a few laying age hens and he people asked me to take the guinea for free... Is she going to settle down? If so how long would you guess this may take? She was the only guinea where she was and was not calling like this...
I am somewhat of a newbie, but the black ones look like Jersey Giants and the brown one looks like an Easter Egger.... Or at least they look like mine did when they were chicks. :)
Holy moly! Evey only gets crusty on her beak, which gets rinsed off when she drinks, so I am lucky there. I will try the spray nozzle and maybe it will help blow out the feather bits down deep. Dexter is not a cross beak and he is quite dedicated to Evey. He will find yummy bits for her and...
They look great! How do you brush/bathe/groom them? Evey looks rumpled... I gave her a bath by dipping her in soapy water (slosh slosh) then dipping her in clean water (slosh slosh) then a towel burrito followed by a blow dry, but she still looked rumpled.
Looking forward to reading this thread, I have a cross beak hen too. :) this is a photo of Evey and her dedicated boyfriend Dexter. I feed her wet crumbles.
I am loving this thread! This a is pic of my mixed cockrell. The people I got him from are not sure of the mix, but I am thinking maybe Phoenix and Maran given his fuzz feathers on his legs.
I was thinking of hatching out eggs from him and the pullets I have quick are Cochin,EE, barred rocks...
Oh, I am a master of seeing the use of things in ways they were not intended! lol. The ottoman and a side table, along with some stabilization acrylic scrap pieces have done the trick. Honestoy, the ottoman was taking up a lot of space, so using it was helpful. We now have a 6x3 foot box that...
Lol, absolutely! I am already armed with more large boxes and now that I have a day off, I am going to follow your instructions!
I want to raise the box, but our studio apartment above the barn is so small I cannot fit a large table thru the door! I am concerned the ottoman I was using will be...
I have seen a few posts of people moving their chicks from the brooder to the coop and being concerned that they do not use their roosts. So, I thought I would post this fuzzy photo of my chicks on sticks in their brooder box. I added the sticks to give them something new to explore and they...
