    The Incredible, Inedible, Mr. Smith

My week and a half old Serama chick was pecked by other moms early on. She was getting better then attacked again today. I had given the egg to my broody silky but she turned out to be a worthless mom. I have brought her in the house under a light, cleaned the wound, applied Neosporin and have...

TWEAK MY COOP~Tweaks on the Cheap

Hi Bee, just gotta tell you first I subscribe to all of your posts. Love your down-home wisdom and can-do attitude. Also your spirit and spiritualism. :)That being said... I am confused. Your coop looks perfect on a bright spring day.....but I don't see your deep litter and I can't imagine...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Put on some thick gloves...one of my two broodies now is sweet but I've had them latch onto leather gloves before. One broody sweet, one a biter, but she's a little Serama and it doesn't hurt a bit. Glad my big ol' BO is sweet because she could bite hard if she wanted to!!!

    Broody Hen Thread!

They will go out on their own. My 2 mommies and babies (48 hours old) were on the floor of the run (under the mini coop where they hatched) when I got home from work today. One baby had made his way Outside the wire and everyone was agitated. I caught the little peep and put him back with his...

    Broody Hen Thread!

My Buff actually ate the egg shells after the babies hatched. She was munching down on one and I was terrified that she had eaten the baby too but nope, all accounted for. Chickens are so funny sometimes. I will trust her next time!

    Broody Hen Thread!

Same thing happened with me...i had one that vanished! I wonder if it was a dud and one of the moms ate it? I'm serious, I think it could happen. One of my broodies was cleaning up the egg shells on hatch day and I was terrified she was eating the babies. They were zipping and I was afraid to...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Mama Helena has 4 baby Seramas she and BO Freckles hatched Saturday and are tending together. These babies are destined for a friend, and this is my first time with broody mom (s). Wow, it makes it soooo easy on me! No box, no brooder lamp, no messy food and water and worrying about them...

    sexing seramas! please help!

In my experience (which is limited) Serama cockerels seem to start looking like boys earlier than other breeds. So i think if you have one with a bigger comb at 2 weeks, and you can see a visible difference between nestmates, you probably have a pair. Fingers crossed.

    Broody Hen Thread!

I would guess that she would stay put and wait for hers. In nature other clutches would hatch around her. These mamas can be really determined. But I'm totally inexperienced. Maybe someone else will weigh in...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I agree with "the Lady". I started with 14 shipped eggs in Sept and divided them between the incubator and my broody Silky. The incubator produced one (1). Silky hatched four (4). Same egg shipment. These were Seramas which are supposed to be hard to hatch in any event. I have 4 under dual...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thanks!!! Me too! Anyone have experience with dual moms? They are both gentle and while they puff up and squawk a little at me, they let me lift them, feed them scratch, and pet them. No biting or the usual broody attitude. I hope it means they will be gentle to each other And the chicks, if we...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Can I jump in to the broody hen hatch-a-long? I have 2 hens sitting on 6 fertile Serama eggs (from my own chickens). They are a huge heritage Buff Orpington (Freckles) and the mother of most of the eggs, my tiny little Serama (Helena). I started the eggs in my Brinsea but put them under Helena...

grandma's way vs. the experts way

I have a small backyard flock. I have layer feed available to them but honestly, I think I'm mostly feeding the squirrels with it. My birds free range from morning to night. When they eat chicken food They mostly want scratch feed that I started them on as a treat but now they are spoiled and...

    North Carolina

Hey NC folks! I have a small backyard flock here in Greenville and I have a pure Serama cockerel that I need to rehome. His name is Demi and he is very small. Born October 7th...i hatched them under my Silky, the eggs came from a Serama breeder in Pennsylvania and you can actually see the...

My five Serama babies born this Sunday. They are so cute and soooo TINY. Any other Tarheels (or Dukies, as the case may be) with Seramas on here? Dutchbunny sooo sorry for your losses. Can certainly understand all the upset going on. I have no husband but my son is commissioning this year and...
