The black and gold pullet is the now grown cross between Buff Brahma rooster and barred rock hen. The rooster in this pic next to her is from the sam buff brahma da and a brown leg horn hen
I have a Buff Brahma dad and barred rock mama. Just recently hatched a completely black chick at 28 days incubation under Chancleter surrogate. I almost threw the egg out after 23 days but the mama was so faithful to those eggs that I waited. So glad I did. 3 eggs hatched. One on day 21 (Buff...
Mrs K, Thanks for your advice. I've had only one experience a few years ago with a hen who hatched 4 eggs, I died after a couple of days but I had the please of watching her mother them for 6 weeks at which time she said "see ya" and they were on their own, eventually integrated into the flock...
So I had a broody hen who started collecting eggs. After a few days, I marked 8 or so eggs under her. She stayed faithful and at day 20 I decided to move her into our brooding coop along with her eggs. The next day 1 chick hatched. A cockeral. She kept setting on the eggs and a few days later I...
I keep mine in a run attached to coop until about 6 weeks. They are by then scratching, eating bugs and greens. Then I let them run in the yard for 20 minutes at a time, then I heard them in with a broom or staff. After about a week of this, they get the idea of where they belong. But I'm always...
Your area is more densely populated than Jackson. I originally didn't want roosters but after getting an Ameracauna pullet and finding out the second was a cockerel, we decided to keep it and let them breed. Unfortunately, those were lost. So now I'm starting a new flock.
Jackson has alot of farms so even though I'm in a residential area, we all have 1 acre. I could have a horse if I wanted to. LOL No complaints so far!:)
I'm in Jackson. Nothing in the books. Thankfully! I'm on an acre, too. That helps. My neighbor has 3 or 4 roosters but only 1 or 2 crow. Only 1 of mine crows.

I got 8 day old chicks in Aug. adopted 4 more, culled 4, added 4 6 week old chicks. 2 of the adopted are cockerels. Got my 1st 2 eggs today! So exciting!
Welcome, I, too, have just rebuilt my flock. I had a wonderful flock of 20 a couple of years ago but after getting a second dog, my Maxie (7 year old lab mix) who loved my birds and would sit out back with them when they were out roaming, started attacking and killed 2 birds over the course of a...
So I have 2 cockerels that I rehomed when they were 2 or 3 months old. I assumed they were pullets but 1.5 months ago one started crowing and I was shocked. I don't know why I didn't see it before. lol Anyway the 2nd cockerel was confirmed today. It is a mixed breed without the long tail...
I have 2 coops, one for the older flock and one with the 4 younger chicks. I usually integrate them when the chicks are 3-4 months old. They will all fit into the one coop by spring, unless the two roosters change behavior. Then I will separate them. I'll probably get some new chicks come spring...
OK so now I have 2 Cockerel and 9 pullets. 5 are 5 months old (just got my 1st egg today), and 4 6 week old chicks. With 2 roos I'm thinking I'll need more hens.
