    Crumbles

I've been feeding my quail the Purina layena for game bird crumbles. They throw a lot out into the tray, where it is promptly pooped on, and then attracts thousands of flies. Does anyone feed anything besides crumble to their birds? Am I the only one having problems with the flies this year?

    Raising meat birds...

I decided to dispatch before the 8 week dispatch date for several reasons. First, I had read that quail at 8 weeks, though a little larger, is tougher than 7 week birds. So I was going to shoot for the 7 week birds, until I talked to Robbie at JMF, which is where I got my eggs. I felt he would...

    all who are hatching quail

I would think that floating the egg in water would kill a developing chick inside it though... I've been very careful to handle the eggs with dry hands because I had read somewhere they should never get wet. So when I saw a reference to "float testing" I was pretty confused.

    Raising meat birds...

I have a question for those of you raising your Jumbo browns for meat. I have 3 large cages for my birds once they leave their brooder cages. I am going to dispatch at 6 weeks. I've not been separating the males from the females. In order to do this I would need to put dividers in the cages, and...

    quail with crooked neck

Quail Jailer, I have a chick like that! It's a week old today. It's head is smaller on the left, and it doesn't have the left eye. It's upper beak doesn't sit right on the lower beak either, it is a little to the side. I thought it would die soon, thinking it wouldn't be able to eat or drink...

does it matter if eggs lay on there side

I thought we were supposed to store the eggs in temperature around 50 degrees if we were saving for the incubator... :/ I've been putting mine in a Styrofoam cooler with just a little ice, trying to keep it about 50 degrees. Are we supposed to be turning them during this storage period also?

    How much to charge?

I'm sorry! I just assumed people would know this was about quail. James, I was under the impression that they could be put outside at 3 weeks. That's when I've put mine out, and I've not had any problems.

    all who are hatching quail

I don't know about the bob white, but the coturnix need to be between 99.5 and 100.5 degrees. The humidity should start be between 45 and 55 the first two weeks, and 55 to 65 during lock down. I have a Genesis Hovabator and I do really well with it. I actually have two. I keep an egg turning in...

    How much to charge?

I've had several people ask me if they could buy some birds. What would be a reasonable price for 3 week old chicks? 6 week old chicks? What age is best to sell them?

    all who are hatching quail

I helped two out last week. I could have kicked myself afterwards, because I had two chicks that were just laying on their sides in the incubator. I thought it really would have been better if I had left them alone and let them die, because I didn't see them surviving anyway. The next day (they...

    all who are hatching quail

I have the Jumbo Brown Coturnix that I bought as eggs back last August from JMF. For the last 6 weeks I've been setting 21 eggs a week. I get anywhere from 12 to 14 to hatch each week. The first 3 weeks I've sent the chicks to my daughter, who is starting her own quail. From here on out, what I...

    Birds' backs are bare...

I just spoke with Robbie from JMF... (I should have done that to begin with...) He suggested I up the protein by mixing some startena wiwth layena. He is always so informative. I love getting to talk with him!

    Birds' backs are bare...

I'm feeding them Purina Layena, which has 20% protein. I haven't been giving them anything else because Robbie, from James Marie Farms told me not to. (That's where I bought my eggs) He warned me that the Layena would have everything I needed in it.

    Birds' backs are bare...

Their cages are 30x36, which comes to 7.5 feet. I have 8 in one and 7 in the other. I did keep some boxes in them with hay when it was cold, and kept the cages covered with heat lamps. But now that it's warmed up I took the boxes out. I can't see that they're feather picking seems to be affected...

    Birds' backs are bare...

My hens backs are all picked bare... The roo is looking pretty bad himself, but his back is not naked. Is there something I can do to stop them from pulling each others feathers out?
