Hi everyone! This is my first time with SF's and im being impacient lol.. thoughts on sex? Theyre 1 week old as of today!
There are 3-4 that look like the one above, im thinking pullets?
There are 2 that look like the one above and i assume theyre cockerels?
But these ones are throwing me...
I'm new to the breeding aspect of Chickens.. I had 6 Jersey Giants and culled those I felt were lesser quality. I realize these birds still have some faults, but I feel they aren't so "extreme" as to not be able to be corrected through a few generations... thoughts?? I currently have 3 chicks...
I finally gave in and let my broody hen hatch some chicks. Out of 6 eggs, we got 4 chicks.. 2 weren't fertilized. Anyway, they're all black but I'm curious if there's a reason why I'm seeing such variation in their color? 2 are all black, one has a tiny amount of cream and one has lots of...
I'm looking at attending my *first* poultry sale later this spring and i'm hoping to bring a small amount of Jersey chicks. They will be 1-2 months old by the time of the sale. They will be Blue or Black, and out of birds deemed as breeding quality.. I've never sold them as chicks so i'm not...
Keep in mind where I live it's already around -10C (sorry, not sure what that is in Farenheit).
As for the roosters - yes that's a very plausible reason, however 3 haven't really 'discovered' that they are roosters yet, one I just realized yesterday WAS a Rooster! 2 of them are around 4 months...
Hi all,
I'm about 1.5 yrs into chicken keeping and I feel like my flock isn't as healthy as they should be.. is there something I missed or something i'm not implementing well enough into my routine? Here's some background info..
I have 13 birds, 2 are young roosters which i'm going to...
Darn!! I was really hoping my eyes were decieving me, or that regular rules didn't apply to EE's.... does one get much meat off an EE? When do you typically butcher?
I'm finding it difficult to determine if this bird is a pullet or roo? "She" is about 20 - 24 months old, hasn't crowed, bothered the other birds, etc.. all signs point to a pullet, but these are my first EE's so i'm not really sure how to tell them apart in terms of feathers, etc.
This is...
Thanks for the input! I checked them all tonight.. curiosity. All were very active, however one looked like this... You can clearly see the air sac, and then there was a little 'thing' poking into it in one spot and it was moving a bit.. is it possible it's foot broke the air sac, or is that it...
I know the quality isn't the greatest. I've had these eggs under a broody hen and regrettably didn't note the first day. I moved the Hen to a private pen thinking the eggs are close, and she kicked them out of the nest and refused to sit on them; so I put her back in the main coop with the eggs...
Well "Shrek" has been with me about a month now.. so much improvement in his condition!! I'm blaming his poor wing carriage on account of it being +28C!
