Thanks for the encouragment. I've been down this road before. Done the vet route. The meds route. Chicken hates it and ultimately...in both cases...didn't make it. A lot of unnecessary suffering. I love my chickens. This truly is the worst part of it.
I had to put a hen down today who was trying to breath and was making a terrible gurgling sound. I feel absolutely horrible about it and worried I overreacted. She had been sick about a week. Last weekend I noticed her looking at some fluid that had come out of her beak when her head was down...

The on one the right in the top pics...the comb & wattles aren't as red as they appear in the pictures. These little ones are sure giving us a run for our money. Righty and Lefty were rehomed today. They are still together. Would be great if Lefty is a girl so the new owner could have a...
Thanks everyone! I'm thinking cockerels too for the chicks in the bottom two photos. What about the two in the top three photos. Those I'm thinking pullet for those two...
OK...last time I do this......with this batch of chicks anyway.
Last opportunity to guess genders!
I've appreciated everyone weighing in on my threads with these chicks at various stages. Doing one last poll as 3 off the chicks in these pictures will be rehomed tomorrow morning. We are...
Thank you! I am going to give 3 to a friend and only keep one of the lavenders for my daughter. My brooder is quite full and so I am anxious to unload three...just don't want to make a mistake!
There are 5 total. A Mottled Lavender and 4 lavenders. I am identifying them by bands. I have them called out from left to right in each picture. Which do you think are pullets & cockerels?
ChickennDudee...thank you! I have found very few willing to take a guess with the very young ones. I agree with you when judging by comb & wattle development & coloring. But if I judge on feather development, I have to go with Lefty & No Band being cockerels. So... we know Red is a pullet and...
Hi! I have 4 Lavender Orpingtons that are 3-weeks-old. I was hoping to get someone with sexing or Orpington knowledge to help me sex these chicks as I know Orpington's are one of those breeds that don't follow an exact mold when it comes to developing. So I really need someone with experience...
Thanks! I think they are adorable myself. Already very sweet.
I know it's too early to tell definitively...just love the guessing game and then tracking my accuracy.
My guess is the two on the right are cockerels. We'll see if I'm right...
The one of the left is actually a mottled lavender. The two on the far right have more yellow down on their chest and hatched a whole 12-18 hours before the other two which are in the middle. The two in the middle have down that is a bit darker on their heads. I've read a lot about sexing...
Our favorite hen was recently exhibiting some signs of not feeling well. After some online searching, I narrowed it down to sour crop. Once I did that, I started searching for treatments. Desperate on a Sunday morning and after reading this post the night before, I ran out and bought some...
