I have to sell my beloved 4 hens and their tractor due to divorce/moving. I have 2 BA and 2BO and they are almost 7 months old. I love these girls, they lay beautiful eggs, love to be petted and held, are used to kids, and used to free ranging. I don't even know what to charge, I have been in...

Why do chickens take dust baths?

Mine have a preference for potting soil. Today they found some in the yard from a pot that got dumped out last fall and haven't left. They like ashes, too, I just don't have those available in the summer.

Quote: They usually sell the animals at the end of the season too. I need a lamb to help cut my grass........ Got to get a little barn for it first and a run to keep it safe when I'm not home. It'll probably need a friend too. oohhh, maybe I can coax my hubby into it over the next few months!

I just took my kids to the Forest Park animal farm yesterday, they have lots of chickens this yr. I told my husband how adorable they were, and what do you think he said? NO more chickens!!! darn! And it is chick days again at the co-op. Maybe next time!

    AAggghh-the flies!

My chickens free range and the flies ARE NOT in their tractor but wherever their poop is throughout the yard. So if there are any suggestions for controlling flies outside the coop, I would love to hear them. (Hope you don't mind me using your thread )

    Raising Chickens on a Roof!

Wow! I have been on some beautiful rooftop gardens, not asphalt/ cedar shingled, but actual rooftops where people are supposed to spend their time as well. I think that is such a fabulous idea! Talk about reducing workplace stress. My last workplace had a gorgeous rooftop garden/break area and I...

10lbs. of food in one week?!

Go ahead, buy the 50 lb bag!!! You will use it up! I have 4 hens, which I got when they were 4 weeks old on March 17. I have used almost 100lbs of food (there was just a bit left of the last bag when I went out this morning). That is all starter/grower. Our co-op guy said to keep them on that...

    Cob chicken coop???

What a cool idea! My husband helped build a straw bale house in Spokane and we thought it was fantastic. I can say this, though. We live in a very wet area, on a sloped lot ( used to be skid row for the Snohomish river - it is that sloped) and we built a tractor to house up to 6 birds (4 right...

How do I keep the chicken's off my deck?!

Great ideas! My chickens have discovered my back door (covered back porch) as well. They also seem to like the bristle-y door mat. I don't really want to step outside in a pile of chicken poop all the time. My dog seems to like their company when he is there due to rain though

soon to be 4 weeks old -- wife wants them outside

Mine were outside at 4 weeks full time, 100W lamp on at night, at it was getting down in the upper 20s and lower 30s. they were fine. I did use a towel to cover any drafty areas when it was really cold, but it was only a few weeks before they didn't need heat at all and it was still well below...

When do my chicks stop peeping and start clucking????

I am a first timer, but my chickens just started clucking within the last few weeks. They are 16-17 weeks old.

When will my chicks start to roost?

My chickens JUST started roosting and they are 17 weeks old. I thought it would have been way earlier, I showed them how to do it many times. That didn't seem to matter at all. They free range in the yard, but when they nap during the day they still sleep in a pile together. They have even piled...

Quote: I just made a post under "managing your flock" about leaving for the weekend or so. I would be willing to be a chicken sitter. We have a dog who probably wouldn't want people coming into our backyard that he doesn't know, so we aren't really looking for a chicken sitter as of now. Too...

    question about free ranging

so we have been letting our chickens free range during the day for several weeks now. At night they (4 hens) are in their tractor. We want to go away for the weekend soon. We can't leave them out of the tractor for the weekend, but it feels so cruel to leave them locked up for a few days now. I...

That is a shame! My hens are so .....mellow and not smelly, not loud, nothing. I can't imagine them being more than a nuisance than dogs on the run or cats that pee all over the lawn furniture. (I am a dog and cat lover, btw). Just too bad. I can see a hoa stating something like that, though...

He is a 12 yr old mixed, but giant breed. Pretty much doesn't want to do much of anything these days, he sleeps a lot. When we got the chickens I let him sniff and look at them and he got treats for laying down/sitting and being good around them. I told him they were his babies and he needed to...

Hmmmm..... you are all making me very paranoid. I just started letting the chickens out all day -free ranging- and my dog is usually out all day as well. I am trying to decide if i should just keep the chickens in their tractor, which is a hard decision because we all love seeing them run all...
