    Wanting to sprout....

I mixed mine together after I checked germination. (wheat, kamut, split peas, lentils, buckwheat, barley) My first try I had the scratch grains with cracked corn and it sprouted ok, but the corn made a slimy goopy mess by day 3 and was fermenting and moldy..yuck! I found that the milo seed in it...

    Wanting to sprout....

Many peer reviewed studies have shown that sprouting beans and other grains greatly reduces the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors (the antinutrients) in them. As the seed sprouts, it used these compounds up, or they are rinsed away. Some studies show 70% by just soaking, up to 80% after they...

    Wanting to sprout....

I went to my local Asian market and racked up on whole grains to sprout...Kamut (wheat), regular wheat, whole barley (not hulled) wild rice, buckwheat, mung beans, millet, rainbow lentils and split peas. I got about a pound of each. Some organic, some not, but all human safe! Did a test run one...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I just started this today. Soaked some wheat, sorghum, millet, corn, sunflower seeds, lentils, and quinoa. Drained and placed it across the top and bottom of a 24 count Costco clear egg container in a sheet pan (poked holes in bottom of egg container). Put another clear egg container on top...

I din't have the heart to burn it, I put it in my front veggie garden which is on the other side of the house, and the chicks never go in the front yard prob 200...

UPDATE: I went ahead and put her down today, she had started dragging that leg and doing the "split". She hadn't eaten anything since yesterday, and that was maybe a teaspoon of oats. I'm not sure if I have the heart to do the necropsy, I may send her to the state lab in Nashville, its $25 plus...

It is a Foscam model C2. http://foscam.us/products/foscam-c2-white-indoor-hd-1080p-wireless-p2p-ip-camera.html It is on the Wifi network, as we have electricity running to the coop. It has motion and sound detection and infrared (night) vision. My husband let me "borrow it" for a bit after we...

Roost is 3 ft from coop floor, then another 2 ft down out the pop door. Sometimes I have seen them try to fly all the way off the roost down to the ground, but I think they are all too fat to do that now. They have room to land and reset before going out the pop door. You can't see it by the...

It's funny, now that I think about it, the BFF of Ginny, our Delaware "Luna Lovegood" limped about 2 weeks ago for about 2 days. I was just about to separate her to "Chicken Time Out" and boom, she was better the next day. Her limp was not as bad, but was similar. At first, when I saw this one...

I do plan to rake out our straw litter from the open run tomorrow and add new. Everyone is molting, so it's full of feathers. Should I burn it or throw it in my compost? My coop is freshly whitewashed on the inside (with hydrated lime) and I do sand, in the bottom, so I'll clean that out and...

If I cull her, I am going to do a necropsy myself. My sister is a vet, so I will facetime her if I need help. I hate to think about it, because I love my girls, but I'ts always best to have as much info as you can. And I have her about 20 feet away from the others...I know the virus spreads...

I also like hearing how people don't give up if they have a large scale loss. That is what I most fear...I lose everyone and my yard is "Forever tainted" "dead zone".

Thanks so much everyone! I have read the "Big Giant" thread, and others. Hadn't seen the posts from rebrascora...those were helpful and comforting. I am hoping for injury, but she has no grip in that foot and no guarding at all when if feel around. It seems at least partial paralysis...Time will...

My 20 Week old Red Sex link pullet "Ginny Weasley" went lame on Thursday. She has very little use of her right leg. She is eating and drinking a little, but not enough. I am now tube feeding water. I have her in a small (2x4) chicken tractor in some nice wild violets and dandelion separated from...
