Before you tell me to dispose of the chicken in some other way, I know I can. But this is my son's pet and he doesn't want it in the trash and there's no room in the freezer to keep it until spring. That said...
Any tips for digging a chicken grave in snow covered, frozen ground? I've read...
She has water belly (ascites). I drained her with a syringe and she is a little better, but it was just to buy her time and make her feel better. It is usually fatal eventually.

Someone on another list suggest this, and I think it is what she has. Water belly, usually fatal.

I had one like that who died. Mine had poop that looked like raw egg, yolks and white combined. It was probably egg-yolk peritonitis, aka, internal laying.
We have a sick hen. Shiny has all the signs of being egg bound- lethargic, penguin walk, etc.
Her back side is puffy, and I don't see that listed as a symptom. I felt inside with a gloved finger, and can't feel an egg.
We gave her a bath and fed her extra calcium (pic is my son giving her...
I've been treating the SLM for more than two weeks, mostly with rubbing nu-stock and/or Vaseline on her legs, and yesterday added a little Ivermectin to Vaseline and rubbed it on. It looks better now than it did two weeks ago.
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Buff Brahma, almost 7, don't know weight, seems a little lighter
2) What is the behavior, exactly. (Also symptoms and other possible factors)
-One leg swollen
-Recovering from scaly leg...
I recently treated my girls with Wazine 17. Is it necessary to wait a while before treating with Ivermectin, or can they be safely done one right after the other?
Thanks!
Sounds like a good idea. If it is a sprained or pulled ligament or tendon, what is the treatment and how long should it take to resolve? I'll search the forums for more info now...
Not that I've noticed. I'll have to go out and take a closer look in a bit but it's freezing cold here today.
Part of the reason I'm wondering about a sprain of some sort is that I was experimenting this year with using sand instead of litter in the coop. I now view this as a failed experiment...
I can't believe I didn't notice this until now, but maybe it just developed today? Does it look like the leg on the right in this picture is significantly larger than the left?
Yes, the Wazine treatment was unrelated to the scaly leg mites. I was just wondering if it might have caused her loss of balance somehow. like maybe she drank more of the water then she should have and it was a little toxic?
Today she seems about the same. Still eating and looks relatively...
A couple pics. In the one showing the back of her leg, is the raised, pink, patch normal? This was right after soaking her legs in warm water with epsom salts for 15+ minutes.
That's actually what I have been using! I got separated so it was half oily, half thick paste so I squeezed it all into a glass jar and added Vaseline. That made it a lot easier to apply. But it hasn't cured her yet. Applied it about a week ago and again today.
Can this be related, or is it likely coincidental? Yesterday, I treated my four hens with Wazine 17 (1 oz in one gallon of water for one day). Today, the oldest one, an almost 6 year old Buff Brahma, is stumbling a bit and seeming to have poor balance. She also appears to be limping a little...
