My kids each entered a chicken into their first show at our county fair. Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive, but I don't think we're going to do this fair again. We have to check in the chickens on Wednesday night. They stay there until Sunday night, in a small cage with a wire bottom. They...
My Muscovy just started laying eggs and we cracked open the first five and are going to let her sit on the rest and {hopefully} hatch little babies. However, when we cracked open the eggs they appeared to NOT be fertilized. How can this be? There has been PLENTY of mating going on! :)
I did read...
Our Muscovy just started laying her first eggs and I want to let her hatch them herself. Do I keep her in the same coop or move her to her own private brooding area?
I have a trio of Muscovies - of course it was supposed to be one drake and two hens but ended up being one hen and two drakes :(
They were hatched last May which makes them 10 months old now and we still haven't gotten any eggs. What gives? I read they can start laying around 5-6 months old but...

Yes - of course! The mold in the fridge - I don't know why I didn't make that connection earlier . Ok I'll try the vinegar spray too. Thanks again for all your help!

I thought I read somewhere towards the beginning that mold has a hard time growing below 62 and if you are having a lot of mold it might be too warm...??? BUT, the mold I am getting is the soft grey you described so maybe I don't have anything to worry about after all. I'll move my...
How much light does it have and what temperature are you at?
It has a good amount of light ( a little direct sunlight but not much - maybe a couple hours) and right now our highs are 60 and lows are around 42.
I tried this many times over the summer (I grew indoors so that it wasn't too hot) but I kept getting mold. I would rinse in bleach and still get mold. Then I waited and tried again once the temperatures cooled. Still got mold. And I'm in Vegas where there is almost no humidity UGH! So...
I know this sounds ridiculous, and I feel silly even asking, I mean chickens peck. It's what they do. But I have one hen ( a barred rock) who I don't even want to be around because if she is in pecking distance of me she will. And she's not gentle about it. I hate to dread any of my girls, but...
ok wait - when you said "bullseye" I thought you meant smack dab in the middle of the egg. Now I realize you were talking about rings like a bullseye (is that correct?). Just cracked open two more and I believe they are definitely fertilized. So strange... who is my rooster that refuses to make...
well I'm new at this so take what I say with a grain of salt - but from what I understand as hens get older they don't necessarily "stop" laying eggs, they just slow down. It might be a steady decline in that they only lay a couple per week, or they could stop for several weeks and then pick...
