Has anyone here ever heard of or had a Goliath chicken? I've never seen one of these, but a friend is raising some and I wondered whether they are good layers? Any info.? Pictures? Thanks!

    egg laying and portable pens

Hello all! We have a chicken tractor that we move once a week to allow for better foraging while keeping them safe from predators. For a few days after we move the pens, our hens quit laying. Is this normal? Would a permanent coop be better for them? Also, what about a regular coop with a...

    portable pens

Good morning! Does anyone else here have chicken tractors/portable pens? If so, how do you manage moving it without interrupting the chicken's egg laying cycle? It seems every week when we move ours, it takes a few days for the hens to lay again. Is moving them the problem, or am I missing...

    rooster

Whoops! 3 Buff Cochins and 1 Barred Rock. Our granddaughter named her (the BR) Fatty Patty. She used to be the boss, but since the rooster made himself known, he's the KING now!

    rooster

I can't tell you exactly how old he is. We bought the chickens from an auction and all they told us was that they were all hens! He's a Splash Cochin and really beautiful. He's in with 3 RIR, 4 Buff Cochins, and 1 Splash Cochin hen.

    rooster

Well.....it definitely is a rooster. I heard it crow this morning for the first time. It's in with 8 hens (I think!). This should be okay, shouldn't it?

    sex change?

Thanks to both of you. I've heard of chickens changing from hens to roosters, but I think you're right. This one is just a late bloomer.

    sex change?

We have what we thought were all hens in one coop. Just recently, though, one has gotten much bigger than the others, the comb and wattle are bright red, and it's a little more aggressive. (It's a Splash Cochin.) Is this possible, or did we just get a roo in the mix by accident?

    feeding oyster shells

Thank you so much, panner. We have LOADS of the clam/mussel shells around, but I didn't know they would be toxic to the chickens. You have saved us from a HUGE mistake!
