Update to what ended up happening-
We separated him for over a year. He is now 2+ years old. He will try to kill a hen still that either fights him or runs away from him. Luckily the three hens he was raised with and are the same age "accommodate" him and he acts like the perfect rooster with...
Jane, in the small bird in this photo to show her size better. She has also raised all of our birds for the past 3 years as day-old chicks. She is smart and a great mother and is always healthy.
We have had Red Star, Oppingtons, Eggers, Legbars, etc. Our one hen, Jane, that found us four years ago is being the
hardiest of all the birds we've had. We would like more of her breed/type. What am I looking for and can I find it? Thanks for
help! Christina
So he has been separated all day and this evening I put the 2 dominant hens in with him for the night and they were bossing him around right away. So... THANK YOU ALL so much. I did NOT know what to do and your advice was (once again) AWsome! Now back to bed!!
He does not attack the two dominant 2 year old hens. They do peck him. I had not thought about separating him. Do I put the two dominate hens with him for a year or just put him alone? He would been right next to everyone in a run.
One of the chicks that we ordered through the mail turned out to be a roo. This is (amazingly) the first time this has happened to us out of 14 chicks throughout the years of buying day-old sexed chicks. He is 6 months old and "breeding" everyone.... "___" because it is chicken rape to some of...
An update on this hen now that a few years have passed. She, Jane, has been the best hen of all. She is the smartest and has been a great mother to 3 separate groups of day-old chicks. So glad she found us. I'd love to have a flock of her smart healthy breed@
Very helpful links. Thank you! I have nothing in the way of meds etc. I do have Neosporin and I will set-up her hospital/ fly free cage today. The wound does not appear to be deeper but I only pushed on it a little. I didn't see any maggots. I will go to the TS tomorrow morning. And I will...
This is our 4-year-old Barred Rock hen that hasn't layed eggs for over a year now. I took this photo today of her and I have no idea of what this is or how to start helping her. Thanks for any help. She is eating and moving about fine. As you can see this is below her vent. I did wet her rear...
Two hens were sick a month ago and only one recovered fully. At first, the two hens looked sleepy in the middle of foraging and then they looked a little out of it. One of the hens now is completely back to normal but the sick hen started to lose her appetite. She now falls down if she tries...
Update- Everyone is now on one type of starter non-medicated feed. No one is picking on the chicks. And when the chicks are out of the run I don't leave them ... I feel like their Secret Service detail. One of our dogs helps to guard the group as well.
