I need a good Survivor name for this chick.
First he was a leftover from my broody hen so he would of died then when she got off the nest.
Made it past my first culling when I candled the leftovers before going into the incubator.
Barely made it past my second candling... Smh
I was worried it...
I think you are ok unless you hit blood. Even a little blood is ok. Just stop once you spot blood.
Some times a little help is all they need. Others I've had to completely help them. Good luck!
I couldn't tell this morning if it was still alive so I made a small slice in the sac and it bled a tiny bit. A couple hours later I saw movement. It's been 24 hrs and it's is still moving but hasn't made an attempt to "hatch" or chirp.
Image of the damage:
The sac is clean solid white and separate from the shell. Not bloody or translucent or sticking to the shell. I can't see through it. So I guess thinking about it, it's probably close to hatch anyway? Of course getting dropped isn't the best start...
I keep looking through the incubator window...
I have some eggs in the incubator leftover from a broody hen who hatched out Monday. She went broody while I was on vacation and I am not sure of the time table on the leftovers eggs. All but two hatched last night and this morning. So tonight with no signs, I decided to candle the last two...
I bought some silkie chicks 17 days ago and the lady reached into a pen of white quail and pulled out an egg. She gave it to me and said "hey put this in your chicken incubator. the kids will love it." I figured it was a dud but couldnt resist trying it out. Well, my odd little speckled egg...
Ok I'll just ask for the corid instead of "chick medication".
The little one died.
One of the ones I thought was recovering looks poor again. Off to side while the others peck for food :(
Ugh this sucks!
Is Corid a brand or the medication? Should I try a vet or just call around the feed stores?
Fingers crossed that they are on the road to recovery and no relapses.
Heck, I am so paranoid now, I told my husband that we need another brooder. I am afraid to put anything in there again. Once...
Hmm that's possible too. Sounds like cleanliness is the key with that too.
She incubated them. She has a LARGE farm - guineas, ducks, quail, pigeons, goats, pigs, rabbits, etc. The bedding she put in the box looked used, like she grabbed it from another cage. I was busy watching my daughter...
Yesterday morning I bought 7 silkie and 1 polish chick. I was told they are 3-4 days old. A few a lot smaller than the rest, so I am assuming they are more like 1 day old. When I brought them home, I noticed the bedding in the box they were packed in smelled sour. I put them in the brooder with...
Ok I forgot to mention that the one I lost had the "runs". The opposite of pasty butt....
Now my little pale one is seeming lethargic, but no "runs"... I put his beak in the sugar water a few times...
Do you think they are diseased? Should I vaccinate them? Is it too late?
Do silkie chicks need more heat than "regular" chicks?
I bought some 2-3 day old silkie chicks yesterday and I lost one last night. It seemed a little punier than the rest and I had dipped its beak in water a few times. I just think he was just weaker, etc.
The rest are in the broader, but...
Well I had 8 successful hatch out of 10 the first and 10 out of 12 the second. This is the third and so far 2 successful, 1 died, and one halfway but has been halfway all day. Not sure how many of the others are viable, possibly 6. So I guess I have had good success and just expecting...
I know in the big scheme of life, losing a chick before it hatches isn't a big deal, but it still makes me sad and I don't know where else I can vent about it.
I had a chick crack it's egg earlier this morning (about 6 hrs ago). It was breathing well, chirping etc. I made sure the inner...
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are... This is the first time I have incubated eggs.
I have 10 eggs that started 2 weeks under a hen and then she abandoned the nest. I put the eggs in the incubator and 9 out of the 10 hatched. The 10th I am not sure of its true hatch date, but one dud...
#5 showed up at 11p
And #6 just hatched 15 mins ago (3a)
No sleep for chicken addicted
#6 has been a quiet egg and even a quiet chick
The rest were born (hatched?) with a lot of chirping and
flopping about, but if maternal instincts had not woken me up,
I would have missed this chicks hatch...
