    Egg Felt Hard Inside?

The rooster's motto is probably, "Have hens, will travel!"

I know what you mean. I've got one RIR that sounds like your Rhoda. I don't name my chickens, but this hen in particular always keeps a safe distance. Not sure why, she is probably my favorite red out of the bunch.

    Egg Felt Hard Inside?

A tightly formed egg would make sense. I had a hard time breaking it open and getting it out. I live in the country but we do have neighbors who have a few roosters. I wondered if it were possible they met each other somehow, lol.

Review by '' on item 'Barred Rock'

I originally bought some Barred Rock chicks about ten years ago, and didn't find them to be anything special. Now that I have raised them again, they've become my favorite breed, topping Rhode Island Reds. They each have a different personality, become quite a bit larger than the Reds and are...

This breed has been a favorite since I can remember. I had a rooster when I was ten, and still consider Harry to be the most beautiful chicken I have owned to date. We have four small hens now and they are great foragers. We have four acres of woods, and they spend their entire day free roaming...

Rhode Island Reds have always been my favorite. I had the most beautiful rooster growing up and the breed has always stuck with me. They're dependable, friendly and hardy. However, the Barred Rock breed is just as wonderful. They grow larger than the Reds, are just as friendly, and lay great...

    Egg Felt Hard Inside?

We gathered eggs yesterday morning, and I found one that when you shook it a tiny bit it felt hard inside. I thought perhaps there could be a developing chick inside, which would be difficult considering we don't have a rooster. When it was cracked and put into a measuring cup to check it out...

Dead Hen & Digging Around Coop

We got ours at Sportsmans Warehouse. They're hard to find in stores. Not sure if it's in high demand or if fewer places are selling traps. Anyway, you can order them online for the same price (I'm thinking $20) but go ahead and order a few so you aren't in the thick of it waiting for it to ship!

Dead Hen & Digging Around Coop

No LOL not cat proof. We used cat food as bait on recommendation and I guess she couldn't help herself. Her foot was not broken, we saw her running around on our property the next day.

Dead Hen & Digging Around Coop

Yes, they are very reliable traps. We tried it again the next day, to make sure it was just the one coon... and we caught a stray cat. Living out in the country, there's all kinds of things roaming around. She was very upset, and it was not fun getting her off the trap, but we did manage to get...

    Cockerel or Pullet? Help!

I keep thinking the feathers look right for a rooster, but I can't tell for sure if they are or I'm just being too hopeful.

Dead Hen & Digging Around Coop

I thought I might update this for anyone looking to solve a similar problem in the future. It was a raccoon. We know this because we purchased a humane trap where the raccoon sticks his hand down a cylinder and sets off a spring. Their hand gets caught in the trap - but you do have to get it off...

    Cockerel or Pullet? Help!

What do you think? It acts different than the others, has a kind of purplish hue, it's tail is a lot shorter and has always had a slight bend to it. It's comb is slightly taller, face is more red. But I'm not an expert, so I'm asking for opinions. Thanks!

Hens Haven't Laid in 3 Months?

I have seen feathers laying around, actually. I had no idea where all of them were coming from, didn't even think of them molting.

Hens Haven't Laid in 3 Months?

My hens are just about a year old. They began laying in the fall and I was even able to get one egg pretty much every afternoon. But, when the weather began getting colder, I noticed the laying slowed down and eventually came to a stop... for three months. They still haven't picked back up on...

Dead Hen & Digging Around Coop

Unfortunately yesterday I found one of my favorite Barred Rock hens dead. She had been killed and pulled through the fencing (I didn't get a picture). I saw some chewing on a few boards on the outside, but framed our newest cat. I thought for sure this cat killed my chicken, but then this...

    Feeding without purchasing feed

Sounds like you have a plan, but you may try farming some worms of sorts. I know they do need protein, however they will pick up bugs here and there for sure with that amount of land. Some Amish folks do not grain feed their chickens, but grass feed.
