We have just found mites on our hens. They seem to of come from no where. We have never had them before. We have cleaned out the entire shed with jeyes fluid and have powdered the birds. The birds were powdered yesterday and the shed was sprayed with jeyes fluid earlier today but when a white...

Respiratory illness in hen Questions. Please Respond.

I'm no expert but I do believe when they are poorly they do go off laying. Hopefully someone else can advise for sure? Ours did stop laying when they were poorly. Good luck! I know a lot of people would disagree about not culling the sick bird but where is no reason why she can't get better...

Respiratory illness in hen Questions. Please Respond.

Hi, We got two hens from an auction (never buying from an auction again) and when we got them home we realised they had a respiratory disorder. We treated them for two weeks and they are back to health. It took a good week for us to notice change. I know a lot of people would say to cull but we...

Elsie died today. She was really perking up and then she passed away today. She kept leaking a clear fluid out of her vent. I'm very upset. Any ideas what the leakage could have been?

I'm my silkie book she is about the right weight for a silkie bantam. I will weigh her again on weds though to see if she has increased her weight. By the feel of her she has lost weight. She is quite tame so let's is handle her so you can gauge her weight. Fingers crossed things will start...

She has been on the anti biotics since Friday and her last dose is tmw. She is drinking a lot, I guess where she is dehydrated. She is picking at her food throughout the day but she has never been a big eater like some of them are.

If you were in my position what would be the next steps you would take? Is it just a waiting game now? How long do the anti biotics take to kick in?

Ok great thank you. How long does it take for the poo to firm up in your experience? I am so worried she won't get better. She is still lethargic.

No we haven't been weighing her at all if I'm honest. The only scales we have are kitchen scales. She has her last dose of anti biotics tomorrow. My dad said they started firming up but now they have gone worse again. She is drinking a lot and still picking at her food and she has a full crop...

An update. She has still got severe diarreah. Like water. She has been on her anti biotics since Friday. Shouldn't her poo be toughening up by now? She is still eating and drinking and her crop is full. Don't know what else we can do really? How long do you wait?

That's brilliant news. I have suggested a bit of natural yogurt to my dad. She is indoors still with my mum and dad. How long does it generally take for the anti biotics to start to work and show signs of improvement? Thanks so much everyone for your help. Hopefully little Elsie will get...

Ok so the wormer she has had is flubendet which is the only uk lisenced feed wormer for chickens. It kills the worms and the eggs. My dad has just called and said she has been eating lots today and seems a little more steady on her feet. Her poo is now a brown and runny rather than white runny...

What is corid and what does it do ? And what is armprollium? I am going to get my dad to get her stools tested with the vets? Do you think that's a good idea?

No I am in the UK. I am worried that if it is Coccidiosis then the anti biotic she has been given won't help. I feel torn as to what to do. Keep with the 5 day course of anti biotic and hope it helps? As for the wormer I will do my research when I get in. The vet said of you have to sign for it...
